I drive my new 2016 SR5 Double Cab home last Monday from the dealer. We stopped for a brief rest after 90 minutes and I was never able to get the cruise to work on the remainder of the 6.5 hour drive home.

Many discussions here clearly indicate the airbag clock spring is a primary reason for failure of the cruise on the Gen2 trucks.

Can anyone offer me any insights regarding diagnosing this issue?

Oddly, when I drove the truck to fill the tank the next day the cruise worked during the entire round trip.

If any check engine lights are active the cruise control wont work. Any going on, or previously. I assume your brand new 2016 came to you used.

Spiral cable is possible, its hard to say without checking for codes. Sometimes it's a brake switch causing an error code that doesn't alert the driver.

Also I don't think it works in sport mode, but I doubt you were in sport shift mode for 6.5 hours.

spamy - No check engine light anytime I have driven the vehicle. Yes, I purchased the SR5 from a dealer in western NY sate. Cruise worked when I test drove the truck the previous week and the day after I returned home when I drove it to the gas station to fill the tank.

Bishop84 - No sport mode. Only in 'D' for the entire trip home...and averaged 24.4 mpg so I was happy (tail gate was down). I do not know Toyota at all but the fact that the spiral cable was such a well-documented issue in the Gen2 trucks made me think that Toyota may have used the same clock spring for early 2016 trucks but I have no way to prove this. I know the domestic manufacturers utilize this strategy.

I may need to drive the truck more to see if I can replicate the conditions I suspect that lead to the failure on the drive home from the dealer to see if I can cause the error to repeat. Following this, I'll have to see if any local service facilities can scan all the vehicle controllers for codes that do not result in the CEL being illuminated.
