When I turn my steering wheel I hear a popping noise coming from the engine. I just installed a K&N cai and now the sound is much louder, my guess is that the stock air box was muffling the sound because it wasn't as loud before. Anyone have a clue on what might be making the noise? I'm guessing the throttle valve is hitting something.

Did you wash it yet, because that voids the warranty and causes every thing to fail when you wash the dirt away.

In all seriousness I would have no clue and I'm not having this issue. Have you tried popping the hood and have some one else turn the wheel to see what and where the noise is coming from?

haha thanks for that, but no I haven't thought about doing that. I'm bringing it into the dealership today to see what might be the problem, I just don't want them to say "oh thats normal with the 3rd gens" so I figured I might ask the pros on tacomaworld.

    That's weird.
Normally I'd guess the intermediate shaft.

Just a guess based on when I had my 2nd gen. Steering wheel would vibrate offroad. The intermediate shaft u joint and rag joint would make a popping sound as well; I had it replaced under a TSB.

So did you have the pop on your 3rd gen

But I was referring to the pop sound from the engine when I turn the wheel on cold starts.

Also the u joints not greased are for 4x4 trims only right? Because I hat a2wd

Mine pops. Only once and a while. Which sucks because I can't have someone sit in the truck and move the wheel back and forth while I try to figure out where it's coming from.

Popping from the engine...no idea. If you notice, turning the wheel will cause the engine to surge; perfectly normal but it might be related.

I think you might be confusing the steering intermediate shaft with the driveshaft. It's the shaft that connects the steering wheel to the steering rack. The rag joint is accessible under floor tunnel and the u joint through the engine bay.

Does the "check you u bolts and u joints" apply to me even if mines 4x2?
