3.5 more HP less torque than the 4.0 but hard to compare and apple to and orange. They use similar stuff but different animals. Probably can't really feel a difference except in bottom end torque. Gear ratio and lack of extra transmission gear hurts 4runner and they tried to make it do to many car things for what it really is. You want low speed torque off road and not a lot of instant throttle response. You might get in the whoopties and can't quit bouncing your foot off the pedal and beating yourself to death. They say older V6 Highlander gets better gas mileage than the new 4 cylinder one. I think a 4runner with 6 auto and 4:10s or 4:30s would get higher twenty's. My 97 got better mileage but different animals again. Horsepower is in 4runner but you have to be above 3200rpm. Different gear ratios in transmission? I just pat gas occasionally in town. Mine drags me along even in 4th with AWD it's so free running. I can't feel 8 hp at 80 but I might notice more torque on low side which is what I want for bigger tires and just getting into high gear.
