Hi, hopefully this is right place to post this. Brought my Tacoma in yesterday for new tires, when I got home I noticed that the shifter (not the knob) was turned slightly to the left and at ~11 o'clock. I thought this was odd so I twisted it back to 12 o'clock and it seems fine now. It isn't loose, really, but if you twist it will twist with you. I was thinking maybe the guy leaned on it or put pressure in a certain direction and it moved a little.

For the 2016s (and maybe all trucks) does the shifter unit have a little give when it comes to twisting left and right. I wasn't sure if this was a problem and wanted to be 100% confident that this is expected behavior. Again, this isn't the knob itself.

    Thanks!

I have only noticed the shifter knob to be able to move when replacing it. Maybe call dealer .

    Sorry @stan23 , wow what?

Again, this isn't the shifter knob (I know that part can twist off). I'm referring to the shaft itself.

Is it in park? If it is it will be over to the left a bit.

I know the shifter unit will follow the track as designed, that isn't the question.

What I'm talking about is the shaft turning clockwise and counter clockwise if you were to put your hand on the knob and turn your wrist.

In lieu of an actual picture, here is what I mean

I think I understand now. You're trying to access the secret OD gears 7,8 ? correct?

Mine twists and I find it annoying but I think it is "characteristic of the design"

Here is a picture I just took. I put my hand on the top of the shifter and twisted it left and it loosened like a screw. @Herniator - you said this is probably the shift knob turning. I was just surprised that it looks as though it is also twisting from inside the boot as well. I would think the knob only above/outside the boot would turn. Does the knob apparatus connect down that far?unnamed (8).jpg

Shift handles should be quite snug and not turn too easily, but they do turn. Having the shift boot turn with the shifter is normal (I've had that happen on all my prior vehicles).

Take it to the dealer and they'll have you sorted in five minutes.

Pull the leather boot down from the shaft then twist the shift knobe back and forth, that way you can tell what is moving. I would say if you find the shaft is moving then you have a problem. I would call dealership anyway, let them check it's under warranty!

Reviving an old thread. How does one fix this themselves? I brought my truck in to my mechanic to get it inspected. Wife picked it up while I was at work. When I went to move the truck this evening I noticed the entire thing turns like a screw very easily, not sure what may have happened at the shop. Don’t feel like bringing it in if it’s an easy fix.

    Thanks

Never mind. That was easy, didn’t realize just had to pull down the skirt and tighten the knob. Is this something they check during an inspection? It was really freaking loose.

    LS1 swap with nitros.
If you wait an hour, it will change from 11:00 to noon. Somehow the analog clock default must have gotten switched on. Did the service place disconnect your battery?

Mine did this new. Pulled the boot down and twisted it tight. Pulled the boot back up and solved. I guess the guy putting it on just didn’t tighten mine down enough...

Push that chrome ring down at the neck of the knob. Tighten knob by twisting, slide ring back up until click occurs
