A cap for the truck bed is a must for me. The last one I bought new was a sung top in 2000. Turned out that the fiberglass structure was solid, but everything else was really really cheap quality... the shocks, the lock, the screens, the hardware, the handle, the seal. It all was quite flimsy, cheap and shockingly trailer like. It didnt do the truck justice. I know there are other manuf... does anyone have a fav for the new Tacoma?

I just took delivery of a 2016 Snugtop Rebel for my 2016 TRD Access Cab Off Road. (16 years since your 2000 experience.)
Fiberglass molding is stout and very good. Shock lifters work perfect. Carpet headliner very good. Door lock, interfaced with truck doors, lock and unlock together. Overall quality 9.5/10. (I don't give ANYTHING a 10.)

That is great to hear. I like the look of the snugtop. I will read more reviews... I have not ruled them out. unfortunately, the closest place to buy them from me is near the ocean and the guy overcharges for them. I may drive a way to get one if I go that route. thanks for your feedback.

Agree. Just put one on my DCLB and I"m very happy with the build quality. I didn't like the stock locking handle for the Rebel so I upgraded the handle. Everything seems pretty solid at this point.

Your experience with snugtop is similar to mine. I spent $2800 in 2012 for my XV and I kind of feel the same way. I think they look the best, but the paint is chipping, the latch on the right side doesn't hold the glass closed all the way, the lock solenoid gets stuck quite often and I'm banging on the window, now the struts don't open the glass all the way (it stays up when I physically lift it from half mast), it's started leaking from around the windows, the front slider vibrated too much and now has actually worn away the metal part that the latch holds on to. I've already replaced the screens once. I could go on.... For $2800 after 3.5 years it's absolutely pathetic.

    Great input.

You mention lock solenoid, do you have the remote power lock?

Indeed, this was my fear. I talked to the sales guy... and he says... oh, they have made so many improvements now, the new ones are much more solid... bla bla bla. I decided not to listen to him anymore and do my own research. I agree with your post 100% based on my 2000 experience. Now, the fiberglass and inside carpet has been solid which I suppose is the most important part. but the back window leaks like crazy, I have replaced the dampeners 3 times and the lock twice. I gave up on the ridiculous screens and did them myself. I just think for nearly $3,000K this is really ridiculous. I will be using this cap lots, camping, hauling, etc, etc. It is not for looks and will get opened and closed thousands of times. If I pay this again for a snugtop and its crap I will be pissed.

the only thing Is since we camp out of it, I want the flared up cap so it is easier to get in and out of... and I think snug top is the only company that makes that one. So I may be stuck. thanks for your recent feedback. I will likely look at the other review sites for caps.

Thank you for the input, if and when I get my truck, I want the expanded/flared one. I think a low profile camper will be pricey, have not checked much for new prices on the camper.

I've read a lot of topper threads here, and I plan on just doing a bed cover with a ladder rack. Too much money to spend for sub par quality.

Every manufacturer (LEER, SnugTop, ARE..) has horrible customer service and follow up when it comes to problems with shells either by low quality performance or by manufacturer defect. There's a thread on here that is FULL of issues ranging in severity, and the overwhelming opinion is that it really doesn't matter what brand you go with - it matters what dealer you buy it from. The dealer will be the only voice you have if you have issues, some don't care once the sale it over and some will fight for the manufacturer to make it right - or they'll take care of it and then get the manufacturer to refund them for the issue.

I'd really shop around hard for a top quality dealer for whatever brand you think is the best fit for you as far as design goes. It's huge.

yep, I was afraid of this. I remember hearing about this the last time I purchase a new one. Not sure why these things cost so much as the quality on the accessories is a joke across the board. Seems like a good place for a new company to step in and clean house. My dealer said King was slightly better quality than the others.

Yep. Fully loaded. I will say that on any topper the remote power lock controlled by the key fob is the only way to go.

I also went with the snugtop Rebel, i like how it looks, everything looks great. Since this is my first topper, I have nothing to compare it to.

What worries me are some of the reviews above... What is the warranty on the struts for the back window?

Not sure either, there was no way I could afford what I wanted options-wise with a brand new shell, so I hunted the used market for almost 2 years before I found one that fit the bill.

I've put $130 into it since then on new seals (plus labor) and replacing the gas struts for the window which were bad when I bought it. I think I paid $700 for the shell secondhand, and new with the options it has it's $2600. I couldn't imagine paying that much and having issues, let alone so many issues that too many people have to deal with on a new shell - and they're waiting 2 months to get it in, only to send it back for defects and wait another 2 months.

    No thanks!

I'd call your dealer and ask.

Struts are cheap, anyway. I paid $30 for struts for my SnugTop XtraVision - and that was at the dealer. If you know what struts you're looking for you can probably buy them online for half that much, it takes 5 minutes to install.
