A failed part can sideline anyone whether the truck is brand new, a year old or 10 years old. It's what it is and a risk any driver has to assume whenever they leave home.

You need piece of mind, carry a spare just in case.

Nothing much, but we miss you man!

You should be good to go, hell even the 3rd gen poster child ($hitty99) with 1000's of negative post was still on the original cps sensor last I heard, so what could possibly go wrong with yours??

    Cheers!

Edit: But my build is 2/16 so I changed mine

Exact same thing happened to me. I used the Toyotacare and got towed about 15 miles and all Toyota did was replace some transmission sensor. My Truck died completely in the middle of the road. i had to coast into parking lot. Thank God I was not on the interstate.

Someone shouldn't have to carry a spare part for a "just incase" on a brand new vehicle though. Hell, with that logic, might as well buy two tacomas and just flat tow the second one wherever you go just incase. A fluke problem like Elvis' 2.7, sure, shit happens. But, a consistent issue that causes the truck to break down in the middle of the road should be recalled. People shouldn't have to worry about it, or go out of pocket and change it, just to insure they don't get stranded bc of it.

You carry a spare tire and tools right? Why do you do that?

Read about how a CPS works, what causes it to fail and keep wishing every single one ever produced is perfect.

You go out into the woods or off the beaten path you go prepared. You want toyota to replace a functional part you can plan to pay for it.

Not all the original CPS have failed, looks to be only a very small percentage. If you're worried about it, fix it yourself now, ask them to fix it for free IF yours fails or carry a spare in case it EVER fails.

Consistent failure no, only a few trucks have been affected out of the 10's of thousands sold, but it has repeated on a few trucks in hot conditions to cause Toyota to investigate the reason and a new part is now available.

If it's 20 out of 75,000 sold in a 6 month time frame then yes, a few.

How many are you aware of?

You've got to be fucking kidding me. I've never seen somebody post so much and contribute so little to a forum. Total waste of bandwidth.

OP, get a warranty CPS replacement and you'll be set. At least Toyota has a decent replacement CPS, unlike Navistar/Ford with the 7.3 CPS even 15 years after it went out of production.

I knew you'd use tires as a comparison, even though you carry a spare tire for a different reason. A spare is carried incase the tire is damaged from some other object. Which is different than carrying a spare part bc there's a bad batch and you might be the lucky one to get stranded. Your spare tire isn't carried incase you have a bad batch of tires and you're worried them might implode.

Interesting enough though, if a tire company did have a bad batch, I bet they'd recall all possibilities, instead of just letting the owners keep going and just wait until they failed.

Expect Toyota to replace a functional part for free you ask. I sure do, considering that when that poorly made functional part stops being functional, it not only leaves you stranded, but can cause you to be stuck in some sticky traffic situations. This isn't a bad batch of window switches, that you can continue driving with and just bring in when it fails.

People get so upset around here when someone says something bad about Toyota, like you just insulted their brother. Toyota doesn't give two craps about us, which is apparent with all these 3rd gen issues they're avoiding, they just want their trucks to move. Drop the "fan boy" act. It's okay to admit Toyota goofed.

Has your frame failed? Have you had it replaced whether it has or hasn't. Plenty of evidence to support more frames are failing on the 1st and 2nd gens than CPS on a 3rd gen. Do you think they'd replace it for free whether it's functional or not?

    It's the same argument.

My point is if you are worried a part can leave you stranded as a single point of failure ESPECIALLY when off the beaten path a good practice is to carry a spare, just like you would gasoline, water, spare tire, a fan belt and other tools.

If you're worried about a CPS failing then carry a spare.

If you want it replaced even though it's functional, have it replaced but expect to pay, they will not replace it for free because you're worried it will fail.

Toyota will replace it for free if it fails under warranty....

just like they've replaced frames on trucks in the past.

Rust analogy is also valid. How many owners fluid film their Tacoma's? Preventative measure.
If I was to order a CPS, I would install it and keep the original as the "spare".
What are a few hours of my time worth? Probably more than the $100 the CPS costs, so just do it and figure I am slightly ahead of the curve.
