This morning as I was starting my truck it cranked way more than usual, it seemed like it was barley gonna start. So I let it idle for a little then I notice the traction control was off and the check engine light was on. I decided to take my chances and drive it around the block to see what was wrong. As I’m driving I notice that it struggles to get out of first gear and when it does it violently shifts making a large clunk sound. The truck is a 2016 DCSB v6 auto trd off-road and I just hit 70k miles in it.
Anyone have this problem or know what’s going on? Tried googling the issue and some say it might be the MAF or some other sensor.

    Update;
ran the codes, came up with
    P0335 CPS A &
    P1604 stability malfunction

Next steps will be to replace the battery, I need a new one anyways since mines been leaking acid, then I’ll replace the CPS

    Update 2:
took it into the Toyota dealership told them the cps needs to be replace and that there’s a recall on it. So they looked up my vin and told me it didn’t have any recalls. I told them it should be covered under emissions warranty then and they agreed. They are now doing their own diagnostics on it to make sure it’s covered under emissions warranty. Also they didn’t offer any prorate for my battery when I asked about it.

Final Update: Toyota dealership checked it out, they said the cause of it was rodents chewed through the sensor wire.

Get your codes read, not sure what you’d google given that it could be many different things. My money is on cps, seems like a popular item on a menu for 3rd gen Tacoma

Check your codes first so you have something to work with.

Your transmission is in LIMP mode or " Limp Home Mode " .
This means a code is stored in your computers memory and the truck will shift aggressive until you get the codes read as mentioned above .
Limp mode is designed to prevent any further damage to the transmission and allows you some time to get to the shop to have the issue scanned and repaired .
If I had to guess , it sounds like there is no voltage going down to the solenoids and sensors inside the transmission . The SLT solenoid doesnt see where your foot is on the gas pedal so the computer ramps line pressure to maximum to compensate . Torque converter lock up is also disabled while in limp mode .
Transmissions that are computer controlled need a strong 13.5 volts in order to function correctly .
Judging by your explanation of hard to start , I would suspect a low voltage problem .
With this being said , scan for codes is always first which will eliminate most of the guesswork .
Are you still on warranty ?

Wow thanks for the detailed response, I’m gonna scan them after work today and unfortunately I’m not on warranty anymore

I agree that you could have a cps issue as well . This would also cause a hard to start problem

Drove it a little more today and the same issues occurred but I also noticed it won’t go above 3k rpm and won’t shift into 5th or 6th gear, is this due to the limp mode? Also I’ve noticed my battery has leaked some acid out of the terminals, could this contribute to the transmission not getting enough power?

Yes it is. I would read the codes and change the battery first.

Take pictures of the new and old CPS please. The updated part should have a symbol on it the old one doesn't.

Contacted the dealership apparently there’s a recall on the CPS? So I’m gonna take it in tomorrow and I’ll see what they say then update this post.

Always fix the first code first then if you still have issues , try a fresh battery

Tell them you want a new battery, too. A lot of members have got new batteries, the stock ones don’t last long. And drink all the complimentary coffee!
