Anyone hear of 'shaft departure angle out of spec' causing the vibration issue? If so, can you elaborate?

    Update: 4/25/16

Last week I received my 1st payment refund and today I received my 100k/7yr Platinum warranty info. Still waiting to hear about getting my alignment and rear bumper light replaced. Diff is still doing good. I think I have a small whine, but it could just be in my head and it's definitely not the way it was.

Last week my trans seemed to slip a couple of times when it was cold, so I'm still certain it's probably low on fluid and they didn't check it manually like I asked. I called the service manager today because he's about a week and a half overdue on calling me back with my bumper light replacement info. I'm also still experiencing the 'rumble' below 25mph and the hood still shakes.

With the warranty, I plan to drive it till 100K since it's all on their dime now and they'll eventually get tired of me and start fixing things :) Still love the truck and have some goodies coming soon. My gas mileage has greatly improved at 1500 miles, from 16ish to over 20 now. If anything else comes about, I'll post it up.

What's the number for Toyota Corp to file a complaint? I would like to file one for the oil leak I've been having repaired for the last week. Love the truck and haven't had any other issues just want to be covered in the future in case anything else pops up:fingerscrossed:

Be sure to tell them anything else you might be having issues with, like vibrations, hood vibrating...all the good stuff. They will ask what you want, so be prepared to make them an offer.

Great thank you. They should double anything I ask for after making me drive a PriusC this past week:annoyed:

This must be standard operating procedure at toyota. I felt the shudder in my 2016 TRD Offload as soon as I drove it home. I read this forum and took it in to the dealer two days later to have them check the ATF and grease the U-Joints. After 4 hours they said they added 1/2 quart to the tranny and greased all joints. Of course the shudder is still there. I checked under the truck soon as I got home. The front zirks still had factory paint on them. I lubed it myself and both u-joints in front took 7 pumps to fill.

Not all dealerships are the same, I get that. However, I was half way through this thread before I realized that the OP was talking about my local dealership and the one that I will have to use when I get my truck next week. I nearly shat myself when I realized that. His experience with that dealership isn't abnormal. The link below has nothing to do with his situation, but it's about my experience with my 2004 4Runner when I took it to the same dealership. They are either stupid, lazy, lying, or all of the above.

FYI, the link below won't be helpful for this current issue but for anybody that likes reading about how truly awful a dealership can be, it's an entertaining read.

My rear diff was replaced at the recommendation of a Toyota field rep that came to look at all of the issues on my truck. I had the whine at 55-60.

The new diff didn't change that at all. If anything it's slightly worse.

I've driven a dozen other tacomas and they all do it. Manuals, autos, sports, sr5, off-roads...everything.

Anyone that doesn't think they have it: get to 55-60 mph on the highway and feather the throttle. It will whine. 100% guarantee

What? It didn't fix it? I am due for the 10000 mile service and I was going to demand a new rear diff since mine wines at 60mph while feathering the throttle. However I'm not going to waste my time if it does not fix anything.

Well, I have about 2,000 miles on the new one and really don't have the whine anymore. Currently still working on the 'rumble' feeling. Starting to finally make some process. My rear bumper light will finally be in June 6, so we're going to have some fun when I take it back in this time ;)

It didn't fix it for me.

And I doubt anyone else will have better luck. I think I drove every Tacoma on the lot with the service manager. They all have varying degrees of that whine.

But also note, my diff didn't have much fluid in it, which is why it ultimately failed so quickly, but really, it doesn't whine anymore. Now my dad's 14, it has the whine.

And by the way, today is National Wine Day, so cheers!

If they fixed yours, it makes me want to take mine back in and have them replace it again.

I got an 8 year 125k platinum warranty out of the BS so far. I'd prefer an issueless truck.

I don't recall telling them anything specific. Other than as saying I had a howling at highway speed around 60 mph.

I had/have a laundry list of issues and was initially blown off by a shitty service rep. So I think when I got the service manager and corporate involved they were more inclined to help in any way. The Toyota field rep is the one that made the recommendation to replace it (apparently the diffs have had issues?).

I wouldn't be surprised they took a look and realized they put transmission fluid in there instead of my tranny, so they just replaced it. ;)

But it didn't fix it and I swear I feel more clunks here and there now.

    6/1/16 Update:

So it's been a while and my rear bumper light that hasn't worked since day one has finally arrived fresh off the assembly line. I go in on the 13th for this to be replaced, along with an alignment and a promise to manually check the trans fluid finally, and recheck the hood that started vibrating again. They are also supposed to take measurements of all drive-line angels too. I'm on vacation that day, so I'm going to hang around and watch.

My diff whine still has not returned and is fixed. I have almost 2400 miles on it now.

Also, I have kept up with the service manager and the Toyota engineers. I was in contact with someone that had the rumble/slowing below 25 mph issue who had the issue resolved after a very lengthy fight. This person was kind enough to share his invoice with me, which I shared with my service manager. The Toyota engineers didn't even want to see it, but after looking at it, they questioned why there were no part numbers listed on the invoice and basically blew off the repair saying it was not a Toyota authorized repair, even though it is documented that it fixed the issue.

The Toyota engineer did finally acknowledge that Toyota is aware of the problem and said that an approved repair should come out as a TSB by October. It's unfortunate that they refuse to talk to me directly since I have said from the start that this is a driveshaft departure angle issue because I experienced the nightmare of this after lifting my Avalanche 9".

So, basically they are saying it's not the trans and an update to the trans won't fix this. I'm 100% convinced some cheap and simple shims are going to fix my issue, so I guess we will see if Toyota changes their story after another month or so.
