I think Toyota's non-linear throttle control programming has something to do with this as well (you jam the pedal, and it doesn't give an full 100% input for a short time). I posted an extract of the 2GR engine PDF earlier in the thread about this.

It's programmed this way to help save fuel. But I do find it helps on ice. So I haven't been using the ECT button for that reason.

Something to think about! The "camry engine" as some call it beat the 4.0 towing the same exact weight in the same highway in less time

I'm sure there's an orinthologist somewhere wishing he had a handful of some bird shit.

But on a serious note the poster who mentioned auto transmission dyno runs looking like a mountain range was correct. Even then, I'm really surprised how flat the torque curve is on the new Taco.

They also let go of the throttle a few times to slow down to 60 miles per hour.

Not True, I liked my 2.7 in 1Gen Reg cab.
Its right engine for application that is the problem. I understand most of the people on this forum are wrench-litterate, and have problems differentiating between engine oil plug and transmission oil plug... so they swallow any BS Toyota is selling them...
I am not one of them.

This is clearly car engine in the Truck, a very wrong application.
Now this engine in something like Scion Fr-s probably would be greatest thing ever, but in Tacoma it is horrible idea.
Torque curve is clear, if not for low gears and low rear axle ratio that engine would have been absolute dog. Constant Rev to keep Truck rolling will definitively end up shortening life of it.

I would not buy Truck like that new, but definitely I would not buy truck like that used one, knowing people had to beat on the engine to get moving in everyday traffic. (that crap better not affect 2gen resale value )
Crap if Demello tells you it feels like a car engine in his review, how much more you need to recognize its a mistake. Truck just got beaten by 1gen and 2Gen on acceleration for pit sake. My 2007 DCLB 4x4 V6 has higher Towing capacity than same 2016 Truck...
So even if I could live with minivan engine, I am not going back on payload and tow. That would be retarded to buy same truck with less towing and less payload.
    :D

I thought @sean266 just posted saying people will get banned for constantly trolling these third gen threads? Maybe you should go play elsewhere BlueT before you end up on vacation.

I don't Know which 1st and 2nd gen you are talking about, I have driven all 3 trucks and definitely the 1st gen is not as fast as this truck, the 2nd gen is debatable. Again, you draw your conclusions based on this engine being a derivative of the Lexus Is 350 engine which is an awesome engine by the way. If we are going to compare engines by torque, the 4.5 liter inline 6 is way more powerful than the 4.0 that replaced it. The 4.0 did had less torque but more HP than the 4.5 ,hmmm sounds familiar doesnt't it? still the 4.0 was and still is a great engine , problem is CAFE . These engines even though they are powerful , they are very thirsty and that is what TOYOTA is trying to address here, give you a nice engine powerful enough but also a little more efficient.

Believe me I may not know as much as you do about engine construction or development but one thing i can tell you for sure that i have owned and driven every single tacoma generation up to date, FJ, 4 Runner and Hilux in Venezuela and this truck for me and my needs , (offroad, payload and towing) is more than enough and that is why I own one.

That is the single thing I do not like about the truck. I don't need it to check if I'm serious about it before accelerating before it does. If there is any way to upgrade or change this I want to know.
Then again my previous truck was MT. Maybe I should have bought my new truck MT, but I could not do a bunch of test drives since I pre-ordered it and I had to make a decision when it came in, so I went with AT.

I test drove the AT and ordered without driving the MT. There is definitely a smaller lag in the MT.

There are some companies that make electronic boxes that intercept the throttle signal from the pedal and modify it for this reason.
Here is a company that has it for up to 15, maybe they will have a 16 version coming:

Looking at this I understand that the potentiometer from the pedal is responsible for the major part of the delay and not the computer? I did not know that the pedal was that smart...

Part of the drive-by-wire system is called "nonlinear throttle control" by Toyota. I have no idea how the potentiometer impacts the process, but here's a pic of how the Toyota computer doesn't give you full power right away, direct from Toyota's engine spec PDF: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2016-tacoma-dyno-time.410608/page-9#post-11612682

And I bet the idea behind this is saving fuel?
