I just bought a 2016 Tacoma SR5. I'm curious to what ECT is and does. I have read many different things and don't know what to believe. ? When to use it in exactly how it works? Thank you in advanced

Read page 196 of your owners manual. It alters shift points.

It releases the jet packs out of the back of the truck. I would look it up in the online manual for you but it is close to my bedtime.

It's the Electronic Colorado Traction control. It's like hands free parking and lane departure but more useful...it's used to run over the Twins with precision. :D

puts the tranny in a different shifting mode and never shifts into 6th. try it you see the RPM way up when cruising down the road. i drive in shift mode all the time shift into 5th and 6th when it should be shifted.

I'm going to assume the ECT is basically the new ATRAC joke.

I would expect to see even more selectable tranny "profiles" in future vehicle models considering the ease of software control. Flat highway, small hills, tow, sport, etc. would be nice. As soon as one company does it, it will be the norm--and you will control it from your smartphone, lol.

to the OP, as above, it is an alternative shift point profile. While not specifically a tow mode, the profile is such that it revs higher before shifting making it a good choice while towing, but can also just be a sportier mode to drive should you like that. To use it or not is just preference, but will likely affect fuel economy a bit.

After using both ECT engaged and not. I find using it not engaged and tranny in manual shift mode (5th gear) the best all around for the driving I do.
Mostly back country roads, very very little highway. ECT engaged was fine, but did not shift into 5th till about 53 mph. I find myself around 50 mph as a mean, so 4th was just too much rpm's for daily use. Non-ECT shifts into 5th at around 45 mph. Nice for me. You just have to experiment to see what suits you best..

I agree, I am personally not a fan of ECT. Seems like it won't shift into the higher gears till much higher speed, even going downhill. This transmission needs some tuning in a bad way IMO. I know I will get flamed for this, but my Dads 2013 Nissan Frontier has a great engine / transmission combination. That trucks shifts so smoothly and feels like it has a ton of power. Always shift when you think it should.... I'm hoping Toyota or the aftermarket will come up with some software updates for our trucks. Otherwise I will be in a manual in 2-3 years....I really love every other aspect of the truck, but the engine and tranny combination in the automatic is a disappointment for me.

If we did'nt have the ECT & the manual modes as alternatives for this engine/tranny combo... I think we all would be disliking the truck more..
Thank god we can use these options instead of just the engine just bolted to the auto. Its a real dog somedays... frustrating enough to use the manual mode or ECT for more response.
Let's all keep our fingers crossed for a software update soon from Toyota.

I doubt that, and after the VW fiasco I suspect US government will look closer into things like ECT.
Lets face it ECT button and what VW did in functionality differs a little. Any automaker can make car that is not drive-able but will score crazy efficiency numbers during EPA testing. Than have a second "mapping" that uses more fuel and gives you feeling of more power. That is cheating similar to what VW did, except in VW case computer was flipping the code while Toyota implemented ECT button that leaves that task to a driver.
However, in both cases original mode (tested by EPA) is abandoned for daily driving which means in both cases, neither fuel efficiency listed or impact on environment is not what was advertised.
If Toyota really advertises ECT as a fix to dog like performance that is flat out cheating....

What VW did was cheat emissions, and not related to ECT or shifting profiles in any way. It changed the way the motor ran, not the tranny shift points. It is primarily a diesel issue anyway, since gas cars generally have no trouble meeting emissions standards. The only issue with cars setting profiles is that they would still have to meet minimum mpg requirements.

What was said is that VW had two software profiles (just like Toyota has for ECT and no-ECT) . The only difference is how software is activated and how much changes it does. The case against VW is that it has two software profiles, and one is used for testing , and other for daily driving. (EPA tested with no-ECT but people have to drive with ECT)
Otherwise sounds like the same thing. Especially if Toyota is advertising this as the "fix" for lame performance.

Tinkering with how combustion takes place is not remotely the same thing as having a transmission software profile.

nvm. Should have know it was you. finally ignored.
