Meh, you trying to find excuse... (sounds like Toyota employee) there is none
It does not matter if you are dumping fuel or running on low gears all the time.

    End effect is the same:
You are burning more fuel, and putting more dirt into the air. Both things governed by EPA.

If it was not the same, Toyota could just build 4 gear transmission. You would get 3 MPG but hey all you would get all that power.
So if using 4 gear transmission is not acceptable, why using ECT button that limits shifts to 4 gears in order to provide better acceleration and torque is ?

Why VW using computer to turn that OFF/ON is bad but Toyota making a button for people to use is OK?

All BlueT is trying to do is make up more crap to insult Toyota. And is doing a poor job doing it.

I used ECT the last couple few days to commute to work and saw 288 miles use 17 gallons of petrol. I'm going to turn it off for the next two days and put the tranny in shift mode at 5. I want to see if I can save some fuel while not getting run over by the crazies on the area toll roads.

ultimate would be if we could hit a button that says PROGRAM ECT then drive thru all the gears in shift mode shifting where you want the shifts to take place then hit a button that says SET.

Lol on the surface this sounds nice but assigning shift points is significantly more complicated than you might think. There isn't a single RPM that will suffice for each shift. It must be dynamic due to varying loads on the powertrain.

However, if you want direct control over shift points there is an EXCELLENT solution...6MT

Not far off, though a button would be insufficient. They could dumb down an interface to take care of all the stuff Doggman mentioned behind the scenes. I think 3-4 profiles would be ideal.

Yeah, they kind of have this in modern high end sports cars. You can adjust everything from throttle response, shift points, damping profiles, ride height, etc. Like you mentioned they do most of it behind the scenes and just let the driver select generic modes like comfort, sport, race etc

So to me, it feels like ECT also changes the throttle response. The truck jumps more off the line with my foot in the usual position. And yes, it shifts later as well. Does no one else notice this?

True story. These trucks have historically had amazing reliability. Problem is if you've driven lots of different vehicles, you recognize right away the engine / transmission could be improved slightly. I work for a large automotive group so you find out real quick it needs a little tuning

so i was playing around with ECT today while out driving. was trying it in shift mode and the RPM still high but get this while screwing with it i pushed the ignition button by mistake (twice). engine keeps on running, a warning light comes on which brings me to the question what if one ever had a runaway gas pedal like was reported in the news a year or so ago. my thoughts on that were i would turn off the key ASAP but no can do with the push button ignition.

Silly discussion. The difference between VW (who I love, btw) and Toyota (or anyone else with a "sport" mode for the auto trans) is simply a matter of divulgence.

Drove with ECT off today and I saw 21mpg vs 16.9mpg. Not a lot of difference in my driving style. I kept the shifter at 3 or 4 in some heavy stop and go traffic and had excellent throttle response. With it in D, I think we all know the accelerator peddle is pretty weak in getting the truck going from slow, near idle speeds.

when driving down the highway in ECT mode lets say at 50MPH turn off ECT keep foot steady on the gas and it feels like the truck is breaking.
