Wow that really is a big flare. That's even worse than the infamous 2-3 flare on the older ford 5r55 transmissions. I'd definitely push toyota to look at it and verify that "it's normal." That way you have a long paper trail if you end up needing a valve body rebuild or solenoids replaced.

Unfortunately though, chances are even with the flare the transmission will outlast the power train warranty by a long shot, especially with regular maintenance on it. So it might just be something you are forced to live with.

Great question splitbolt. Are you referring to "manually" shifting the gears? If so, I have not gotten there yet.

That's a good lead splitbolt. I will try S mode in about a week. Right now, I am trying to collect statistics of 3-4 flair on a cold motor which is once a day for me. Thanks again.

So does it goes away when the transmission is warmed up? Haven't seen the issue with my truck but then again, a lot of things perform differently once they reach regular operating temperatures.

Couldn't this be an annoying but regular characteristic of a cold transmission that is corrected when it's warmed up?

Not trying to trivialize anything but I've also seen mountains out of molehills in the past.

    Hi JS,

The 3-4 shift flair occurs on my first 2 accelerations from a cold start. The outside temperature is about 70F when I take off. I have not seen the flair when I reach normal operating temperature. I was a wrench turner before I became an engineer. In all my years spinning wrenches, I never saw this kind of behavior, displayed in my videos, on a good transmission. If you look further up the post, you can see the 2 videos of the failure.
    Cheers

I saw the videos but like I said, could this be an annoying but regular characteristic of a cold transmission that goes away after it reaches operating temps?

It's documented in the earlier TSB provided by DanielTaco on other drive trains produced by Toyota and there doesn't seem to be rampant transmission failures with them over time. Not saying this shouldn't be fixed but are you worrying excessively over something not affecting reliability or safety and is corrected when the drive train is up to temp?

Honestly I'm pretty sure all the 2016 Tacoma's do this. Mine, the loaner I drove and a test drive on a cold night. Like you said it only happens when it's cold and first run of the truck.

It's not right I've never had another vehicle that does this.

No JS, it is not a normal characteristic, as verified by the service manager, lead service account manager (handling my case), and the Toyota technician (17 year import/Toyota service veteran). This is, quite simply, an oversight in testing/engineering during the Product Development cycle. This has become commonplace in the last 10 years, and it is getting worse, because the producers are unchecked by the consumers.

I know my 1st Gen always seems to lag between 3rd and 4th gear for the first few minutes of driving when cold. I wouldn't say its a flare like in the video because I never watch the rpms, more like a hang shift but it smooths out after the truck has warmed up. It's been doing that for 12 years now and no problems.
