when will someone make an aftermarket forced induction kit? Love the truck but lacks power big time.

The nature of the Atkinson cycle makes boost a very tricky project as the intake gases are vented with the opening of the intake valve. I'd love to see a little more power out of the engine for some scenarios too, but I'm not sure how reliable it would be to go forced induction on this 3.5.

Sorry for the newbie question, but is the US 3.5 the same motor and specs as the 3.5 in the Toyota Aurion in Australia?

No. The engine in the Tacoma is the 2GR-FKS, while the engine in the Aurion is the 2GR-FZE...I believe.

Edit: The FZE is a supercharged version of the 2GR-FE.

atkinson is used through the use of VVT. A retune would turn the engine back into otto cycle.

Not sure why Toyota has refused to go turbo on anything yet; it's always seemed to me they could modestly boost the 2.7L 4cyl and create a 270hp torque MONSTER that would make the 6cyl completely unnecessary in the taco. Or boost a 6 to satisfy those that want 8 cyl power in a taco. Think of the possibilities!!

Just 10 years ago turbos would have been considered heresy at BMW, who prided themselves with perfecting NA engines. Now you can't buy a NA BMW, and even the bottom of the model lineup has more power than anyone could have hoped for 10 years ago. Ford's turbo 6 for the F150 has more punch than the 8! Instead of throwing a bit of R&D, Toyota seems content to just move existing motors around. The "all new" taco 6 is a good example of the blah mediocrity that comes from such compromises.

    Ah well, maybe G4.

That's right. The supercharged 2GR-FZE is also used in the Evora 400.

Everything I have read about the new 3.5 eludes to Toyota just not seeing a whole lot of "real world" improvement in mpg's from turbo charging. They claim that although turbo charging looks good driving like a grandma, most people don't and their real world MPG as well as need for premium fuel due to the higher compression ratios ends up costing the customer annually and compromises reliability. I'd rather have a reliable power plant in my truck than a risky hot rod.

    YMMV

Yeah, I agree that more often than not you will not see much improvement in fuel economy from turbocharging. The F150 with the 3.5(?) 6cyl turbo is not much different from the V8 for fuel consumption, but the acceleration, towing, and overall performance is better in the 6 turbo because it just has so much torque available. To my original point, the 2.7 4cyl could easily be tuned to beat the snot out of the new V6 in the taco. It would be lighter, have more torque, and I doubt that with modern turbo systems and design would be that much more costly to maintain than the V6. Premium fuel is normally only required in very high performance turbos. I doubt it would be required in a truck application. Combine with a designed to match state of the art 8 speed auto (they really are making some fantastic slush boxes these days, I hate to admit), and I bet the fuel economy could be better too if you drive in "eco" mode.

    Anyway just a thought.

I would certainly be interested to see it happen! Especially with an 8 speed beast of a transmission.
