I'm curious whats the new 2016 tacoma fuel consumption (gal/hr) during idling. I know the 2nd gen were getting around .33-.4 gal/hr after warm up. I've idle my truck a few times to run electrical equipment through the bed outlet. I know it might consume more fuel depending the electrical load but I want a good bases at what the new 3.5L with Atkinson cycle can achieve on idling. Maybe someone with a scan gauge can provide some information.

Actually I believe it is pretty good. can't really give you a true number but I can give you a case.

This morning, on my commute to work:

    Distance: 66.4 miles
    MPG: 22.4
    Time: 1:50 min.

I was stuck in traffic, mostly 0-5-10 MPH for 45+ minutes.
I really feel the efficiency of the engine when in traffic.
The truck loves to be in the 600 -> 1500 RPM range.

I guess this is the part where the 6 speed really shines.
you get to be in the perfect first 3 gears when moving in low speeds.

It came about when a group of friends and I were at the beach and our external speaker ran dead and we wanted to charge it. The vehicles we had were a 2014 5.7L Tundra, 2015 3.6L Jeep Wrangler or my 2016 3.5L Tacoma. We used my Tacoma just the logic of the least displacement would be the most fuel efficient during idle.

#James_Bond Correct, the low rpm idle and the 6 speed does benefits the slow speeds for the most fuel efficient from what I can tell. I currently get around 17 mpg but that is with work, gym, grocery store, etc all within a 5 mile radius with a lot of stop and go. Currently traded in a manual 2014 GT mustang with mods and I was averaging 11 mpg with premium. Granted the mustang does entice you to drive faster but even driving as a grandma I would get best 12 mpg around town (5 mile radius) while getting 28 mpg @ 70 mph.

Update: I had a tune that force the mustang to Idle at 900 rpm (30+ hp)... I could see my needle move over a 5 min period. Thats when I would turn the car off at any length of period rather than idle.

atkinson is only used at low loads and highways speeds, not idle.

could be true. But if you run Atkinson cycle and use only the controlled fuel injection system then you'll be getting very good efficiency.
BTW the tacoma is a ULEVIII class so i'm hoping that it doesn't use up that much gas.

The Atkinson cycle is being perform under the idling position. It was stated in multiple articles, TacomaHQ 2016 Toyota Tacoma Debuts - Caution Upgrades, " Knowing that they had to do something to appease customers and keep up with the competition, Toyota unveiled a new 3.5L “Atkinson” cycle V6. This engine also incorporates Toyota’s D-4S technology with direct and port injection. This new engine should be more fuel efficient when idling and at lower speeds thanks to the Atkinson cycle."

The whole design of how the Atkinson cycle operates is optimal for idling since it changes the intake valve timing to close at a later time to decrease the "displacement" under compression therefore requiring less fuel.

I forgot toyota mentioned they stuck a 3.9:1 diff ratio to get more torque. Wish they just stuck a 4.10:1 in the diff and called it good.

Update: Another interesting number on the spec sheet is the new 3.5L runs a 11.8:1 compression while the old 4.0L runs with a 10.0:1 ratio. Usually more typical for smaller high rev engine to have a higher compression ratio but would hurt the idling since it would have more friction in the stroke cycle. Only pluses would be the smaller displacement for less fuel and depending on the Atkinson cycle compression ratio during idle or low load.

I really don't care how much it uses at idle......

What good is a SGII going to do? Its going to tell you 0 miles per gallon.

I can peg my SGII at 999 mpg when coming to a stop sign.

The only way you can get a true number is to fill the truck up, pull into a parking spot and idle the thing for a couple hours, then fill it up again.

Please do this. I'm interested in the results.

Mine is actually UltraGauge, it has INST G/H. My slushbox FJ Cruiser was reading 0.31-0.34 G/H at idle in D, and 0.34-0.37 G/H at idle in N, warm engine, depending on the air temperature. Will try it with stick Taco soon.

Um, why would you believe anything he says? You must be new....

That's what I thought. I would believe the lowliest journalist before I believe anything Seatbelt Sweers spits out

    Here you go,
    (1) driving for 15 minutes and 15 seconds of idling, it reads 0.21-0.22 G/H.
(1b) Immediately after cold starting for 10 seconds, it reads 1.4-1.5 G/H.

(Bonus) I don't see any big "jump" in exhaust temp from varying the loads of engine, went as high as 4500 rpm on 3rd gear, and down to 6th gear cruising. I only see usual gradual increase in exhaust temp, but not jump. Don't know how to see if the engine switch from Atkinson to Otto. Maybe I have to drive more and put more load to it.

Note: manual truck, running on Shell 91 ethanol free, has 2660 miles on it. EL 860 ft, A/C off.

That's a nice low number for idle.
That's the choke effect warming the engine safely
The exhaust is being cooled by the engine coolant. No jump in temp should be expected

Does tour engine show the ratio between port and direct injection?
