Gear spacing and power in first and second seem fine to me. First is quite low so your max speed is low an can therefore make it feel sliggish.

It sounds like it is coming from the back of the engine. Is that where your noise is coming from as well?

@lhintos I really want to make sure you get some piece of mind on this strange sound. I am interested because I have heard it before on my truck as well. So, I will play along until you can get yours identified as a problem or until you are comfortable (as many are) with this sound being part of the normal operation of the truck. I truly have no idea which one it is.

I just went out and fired up my cold truck. 25 degrees Fahrenheit outside. I let it idle for 10 minutes. I did not have the sound. I have normally noticed it after I have been driving for awhile and exit the vehicle with it running to pick up mail or something. At those times it seems like a very loud ticking coming from the engine compartment (sounds alot like all the 22r type 4 cylinders i drove for years).

I am about to leave on a 600 mile road trip so I will pay attention to when I notice this sound and report back here with my findings. I am not overly concerned at the moment, but I will keep you up to date via this thread if you promise to keep all of us up to date via this thread as well.

Lastly, make sure to ignore the trolls that are bound to show up in this thread eventually.

I will keep everybody up to date. Not sure why dealer seems to believe there is an issue, but I will discuss everything with them on Monday, and of course report back. As you said, it all could be normal (I've just never had a car where noise like that was normal).

I took my truck in for all the same issues. Was told all of the noise and A/C stuff was perfectly normal for the new valve set up. They said sometimes it just rattles like a diesel and it would likely smooth out a little over time.

Regarding the uneven bumper, I had the same issue with my front grill. Ended up loosening bolts and installing washers to straighten it out myself. The bolt holes weren't proper on the top grill clips. Little upset about Toyota's quality control with that one. In addition, the trim around my head unit wasn't fully installed. Two clips were exposed and the frame was warped as the surrounding clips were pressed into place. It took a great deal of force to bend the plastic trim to get the clips into place. Actually broke one of em, but the other snapped down into its slot and the whole things still tight as ever. Another minor annoyance. Would have expected crap like this out of Honda (the last two vehicles I owned before making the switch to Toyota were new Hondas and both had issues like this), but I guess nobody cares about their craft these days.

Anyway, if your dealer finds something different, let me know. I'm definitely interested, but likely they'll just tell you it's a characteristic of the new engine

Also, much of the ticking sound comes from the A/C clutch, so check that out.

Sounds a lot like the noise the old 1.8 Toyota/Yamaha 2ZZ engine used to make. It was the VSV (vacuum switching valve).....and it could be loud.

this is what happens when people are putting on all new parts. Trying to figure out the finesse. Even the quality control team members are still figuring out whats good or bad. Its rough launching a new model.
This is why they say " don't buy the first year"....lol
I just had to have it though.
I expected to have some small issues but so far so good.

My 2010 4Runner made more noises than my 16 Tacoma. No problem.

Yeah they explained to me that the engine would also make a sound that was almost like a "pop" before it started the rattle. Something to do with the change of the valve cycle. I can't remember all the details but words were thrown out like "forced injection" and "vacuum" and references to the "atkinson" cycle's self cleaning/variable timing set up. Sure enough, a slight little puff/pop sound always precludes the diesel like tapping.

(Don't judge me, I was preoccupied with a side conversation while it was being explained to me.)

The guys who told me this were pretty straightforward. They admitted that their exposure to the new Tacoma was pretty limited, but said mine was not at all unusual to the ones that they had seen so far. Every owner expressed the same concern. Basically, they said "well if this impacts you it's gonna impact every other Tacoma buyer we've seen since the 2016 rolled out."

the compressor engages on the belt system and it lowers the engine RPM. The computer thinks it's going to stall so it opens the throttle body until it recognizes an increase in RPM

I do not have a 2016 Toyota Tacoma V6, however, the noise or sound in question seems to be a result of having a DI engine. I have a 2013 Honda Accord with an I-4 DI engine and the sound is very similar and familiar. The high pressure DI injectors create diesel engine like sound. It is just a result of having DI engine so you have to be able to discern DI noise from other issues (like bad water pump or idle tensioner).

Basically guys, it's a non issue. Don't panic.

And Yeah, I was the same way. Honda taught me not to buy the first year, but I had to have it. Was excited the minute I heard a 3rd gen was on the way and loved it the minute I saw it. Slight flaws in the fit/finish are disappointments, but I expected some little stuff. And regarding everything else, I didn't expect much trouble, given all the major components have been around for a while.

I'd like to know how you make out with the rear bumper issue. I have the same problem on mine. I can put my fingers in the gap on the driver's side. Dealer checked another one on the lot and had the same problem. Waiting to hear back from them about what they can do for me.
