    hey guys,

went in today with my mind set on pre ordering the 2016 tacoma...then I saw a black 4runner trail sitting in the showroom and I did a backflip

I took the 4 runner for a test drive and also a 2015 tacoma (i know the 16 has new motor and differences but obviously it isn't available for test drives yet)

I have to say I was impressed with the 4runner, it is more expensive, but for my needs (snowboarding camping etc) the 4runner with seats folder down will be more than enough, I like the seating position and overall feel of the 4runner. from what i've read both vehicles give similar off road performance

just wanted to get everyones thoughts :) don't shoot me since this is a tacoma forum:anonymous: i had my mind set on a new tacoma...but that 4runner has messed with me now

New 4 runner coming out in 2016 I believe. May be worth waiting for if you love 4 runners.

You mean a 2016 model or 2017? I am in the same dilema.

Rumour is that the 4Runner is going to get the same engine transmission combo that the Tacoma is getting.

problem is that i need a car in the next 2-3 months max (work is taking away the work vehicle).

i've read around and the consensus is that the 2016 model will be unchanged and its the 2017 model that might get a refresh (tacoma 3.5L v6 etc).

still puts me in a dilemma haha

The 4Runner I hope would get a more powerful engine to haul it around. The dual VVTI 4.0 gets about the same fuel economy as the 2016 Tacoma.

Do you need to haul mulch? Major appliances? Dead deer? If so, get a truck. If not, get a 4Runner. A deer will bleed...a lot. You don't want to haul one in an SUV.

I love my taco and the wife is eyeing a 4Runner for her next car. Both are great!

I thought the 4.0L v6 in the 4runner was same as the 2015 and previous tacoma but it has more horsepower? similar MPG so not much of a concern

haha no dead dear for this guy...don't really haul much at all, just a lot of snowboarding and camping and want to start getting into 4x4ing

that's why i liked the idea of a 4runner, but i was hoping some guys on here had owned both vehicles and could comment, but everyones insight is good

I've been driving tacomas for almost 25 years.
I've considered the same Tacoma vs 4 runner. I hunt and camp and ski and all that , but I'm afraid to go test drive the 4 runner because I fear I may like it too much.

I came across this website and they have really well done Tacoma (2013 I think) and 2 -2014 or 2015 4 runners. The videos are very well done and show the 2 types of toyotas over landing. Also some interior shots and gear storage.

May be worth a watch http://www.xoverland.com

The 4Runner V6 is dual VVTI and has more power and better fuel economy.

It's so interesting you bring this up, I have had my mind mulling over a similar dilemma over the past few days.
I think I will still go with the new taco though. The 4Runner is about 10 Grand more.

yeah it's tough, not sure where you are located but for me in Canada the 4runner will only set me back a few more thousand (approx 5-6k) now I don't want to say it's nothing but on 2% finance why not!! just means cereal for dinner for a year haha

Both vehicles are great choices. It vary down to either you want a bed or a not. I'd get a 4Runner Trail or TRD Pro if I had the money  I like most people on TW or mass public haven't driven the new 2016 Tacoma yet so it's a tough choice. Either you wait to test drive the 16' Tacoma or buy the current 4Runner now.

Lord Helmet I am definitely digging the 4runner trail edition, unfortunately i can't get the trd pro in canada!

do you know if the 2015 trail edition stock skid plates are decent? I tried googling for images or videos but couldn't find anything! and i agree i think it's just whether i need the truck bed and my answer is probably no!

Hey another Canuck. I'm in Halifax, NS. I guess when I am comparing the model Taco with the Model Runner I'm 10 Grand in the diff.
    Truly depends what you're comparing.

It's a TRD stamped 1/4" thick aluminum plate so...... no it's not decent for hardcore rock crawling but for simple off road trail use. It has it's purpose.
