2016 Tacoma Recall Knee Airbag Bolt - Affects 310 Trucks

First time poster and unfortunately its with a recall notice from Toyota. Was supposed to receive delivery last Sunday on a 2016 Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 Blazing Blue, but just got word this morning that it was being held at port due to a recall involving the knee airbag bolt that is affecting 310 2016 Tacomas. Was told the repair would have to be done at port before being shipped to the dealer, which seemed a little odd. Below is a link to the notice of recall that just went up a few hours ago.

Anyone else get word from their dealer about this? I would think they would at least have the dealer do the repair and not have them waiting at a port...but I'm not familiar with what sort of repair facilities ports have for autos.

According to the recall notice linked above... "The involved vehicles are equipped with a driver’s knee air bag module that is attached to the instrument panel reinforcement by four bolts. There is a possibility that incorrect bolts were installed during vehicle assembly at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing de Baja California plant. "

Air bags in the knee area. Seems pretty self explanatory.

 

Hmmm, no notices yet. only 310 of them. mighty small recall.

 

Hopefully just one guy at the plant having an off day. Still sucks that it's delaying my truck for some unknown amount of time while it sits at the port. Patience is an overrated virtue.

 

Mine doesn't show up on the recall site either, so maybe they are holding all Baja made trucks at the port?

 

i got a chance to talk to the our regional Toyota training manager and when i asked about the hold on all the BAJA trucks that occurred before he said he don't have information on that but he know that they send trucks with different stickers one the left and right side "one side TRD Off Road the other say TRD sport". also he had seen some with non matching tiers on the same truck.

 

Hmmmm, good... I thought the recall might due to the frames rusting out.

A knee air bag... Did not know!

 

I received my truck from Baja Sept 18th and its vin was over 1000. Unfortunately I dont know where they started.

 

According to the recall site my Baja/September-built Limited is affected. It had arrived at the dealer a few days before I picked it up on 9/15. VIN ends in 002054.

 

Mine is 001029 and not affected.

 

how can we find out which VINs are effected?

Whew. My Limited due in the next week or so is not affected. Built south of the border.

 

I come from the automotive industry and that type of recall is a safety critical issue. The correct bolts have to be installed as well as a specific torque applied. They were probably quarantined and repaired to the specific requirements. They aren't going to take the chance of the dealer screwing it up. Lawsuit.

 

I worked at a large GM service department for years. We used to get brand new GMC Suburbans with Chevy grilles or maybe the occasional Chevy steering wheel. We used to get stripped down GMC Sierra W/T trucks with the Chevy hubcaps bundled in the cab. My PDI guys usually caught this stuff before they ever made it to the lot......usually.

 

Looks like mine is clean.
