After many attempts to fix what I thought was a leaking roof rack...I read this post and realized it was my 3rd brake light that was leaking . Dealer replaced the whole light assembly and problem was cured !

Same here. 2017 4 door, 4x4 TRD OR, only 3 months old. I noticed some dampness on the rear seats then lots more after a rain storm. Brought it to the dealer in RI and 2 weeks later this thing is a disassembled mess!

They confirmed that the rear light on the cab was the culprit and replaced it at once, and they pulled the entire interior out.

Toyota ordered a mold test (the cab smelled really bad when the pulled the carpet and headliner down) and now they are making the dealer hand scrape all of the black, tar like sound deadening material off the floors. They then need ServePro to come out and sanitize/disinfect the whole cab, reapply the sound deadening material, have another mold spore test done, then put in a whole new interior in! All for a bad $5.00 gasket at the cab light!

I had the same exact issue on my 2016 it is your third brake light they over torqued the bolts from the factory I was told there is a TSB for it. The first dealer I went to tried to charge me $400 to fix it. I told them to go to hell its a new truck and shouldn’t leak. I went to my normal dealer who is great and they fixed it no charge and I was out of warranty. Do not pay them anything it’s a factory flaw.

Why did you wait so long to have it fixed? Shouldn't you have notice something before mold started growing in the truck?

I have exactly the same stain on the headliner of my 2017 Tacoma double-cab. Just saw it 3 days ago. Making an appointment with the dealer.
    Did yours get fixed?
    Thanks.

IMG_1355[1].jpg IMG_1358[1].jpg i have water leaking from the overhead buttons, like where the diff lock button is... water doesnt seem to be dripping down anywhere else in the truck?? could this also be caused by the 3rd brake light? have any of you guys seen a leak in this spot too?? everybody is talking about double cabs here but mine is a simple cab!.. i will take it in to dealer this week for sure but i just want to check on here if anybody else as encountered a leak in that location?! help!

heres a little update.. looks like condensation!? has anybody seen this before?

This is an issue in colder climates. Condensation builds up on the cold roof then melts and drips down. Some things that help are to make sure you don't use the recic button, don't get into an extremely cold cab, wait until it warms up, don't park it inside a warm garage, crack a window or turn on the AC to help get the moisture out if you see condensation on the inside windows forming.

thanks for the tips ruggybuggy! ill make sure my A/C is doing its job. it was relatively warm here today, about 4 degrees C (40F) whereas 2 weeks ago we had -40 weather.. lol
now that you mention it, a few weeks ago i experience frosting inside the truck.. im guessing that frost went somewhere when it melted.. probably my truck's roof!

As soon as it warmed up all the condensation that was stuck on the roof melted off causing the inside leakage. The challenge is to keep the condensation on the inside to a minimum which can be challenging when it's -40c. Let your dealer know. There was a tsb on the Gen 2 for the same problem but nothing for the Gen 3 as of yet.

Indeed, strangely i had no troubles last winter. ill make sure my A/C is working good. if im correct it is its job to keep the moisture out even in the winter time.

It has nothing to do with quality. It happens on all vehicle when the conditions are right.

This is exactly where mine was leaking . I took it in to toyota and they told my the tint guy must have adjusted my sunroof and "did me a favor and fixed it anyway".
I took down the headliner and it had a couple voids in the windshield urethane .. I fixed it myself .

i doubt its coming from the windshield in my case.. from what im seeing its clearly condensation on the steel of the roof itself. i will go and show these pictures to my local dealer for sure tho!! thanks for that info ! also.. i dont have a sunroof ;)

1)he doesn't have the problematic 3rd brake light(only found on the double cabs) he has an access cab
    2) even if it wastes light, the headliner is slightly arched. So unless he was parked facing downhill the water wouldn't drip from the brake light up and over the dome light into the overhead switch panel.

I'm betting it's the condensation theory

thanks for that! im also betting on that assumption. if im correct, the picture shows very small water droplets that indicate condensation? and not a water infiltration.

Update for mine: 2 months later, still no truck! Back ordered parts i guess. It turns out most of the water damage was not visible and was underneath the floor in the back where the water was running into. There's no way to see it unless you are ripping apart your truck or when it starts to smell. They went ahead and replaced the light and confirmed that it is now waterproof.

Im am getting used to the 2017 4Runner they gave me though. Wish I had my truck back....

Amazes me how they can sell 16000 of these a month but don't have a part.
