Do yourself a favor and if you want a 4x4, trade your 4x2 in for one. You'll be ahead of the game.

It's possible. You need a master fabricator, a lot of parts and a lot of money and a lot of time. There is no kit.
Cheapest way is to trade for a 4X4.

The project is a bit more complex than bolting on an Xfer case, prop shaft and drive shafts........

Man, that sounds like a lot of work! I guess if you have expendable cash, nothing better to do, and the skills to do the work, it might be a fun project. Otherwise, go by yourself a 4WD truck.

I highly doubt you could do it yourself cheaper than just trading your truck in for a 4x4.

This got me curious though so with a quick google search I found what parts would be needed, and yeah.... the parts alone would cost more than the trade in. Not to mention the cost of labor would be enormous.
    • Transmission w/ 4WD Transfer case

    • 4x4 ECU?

Exists the possibility, yes. But the cost exists too

ECU is the hard part. Plus all the wiring harness' switches plugs etc.

I've done swaps with older/simpler vehicles.

Unless you have a mildly wrecked donor 4x4 truck sitting there, I would do the trade it in route. And even with the donor you're going to be looking at a LOT of time, effort, and at least some fabrication.

I believe that one or two frame crossmembers are different also. The transmission one is in a different location.

I'm sure you could make up some of that cost by selling the old parts, but still way more effort than it is worth. Unless there's a compelling reason such as another thread on here where the truck belonged to his deceased brother, it just isn't worth it.

Actually, this sounds more like a project to resurrect an old CJ5 or IH Scout or Bronco.

    You'd need a donor and a carcuss.

I think if you were going to do this you would also sas the front end. Then use a manual transfer case to not have all the computer issues.

The Brake Booster/Master Cylinder Unit would also be needed since he has an Off Road, l imagine that piece alone would be 2 grand.

With all the other posts about the headache and cost, we should ask do you actually need 4x4? In the last 5 years I have rarely needed to put it in 4x4. Plus I try to remember to exercise 4x4 once a month to keep everything lubed.

    Its actually not that hard.

Get yourself a junk yard Dana 60 or buy one ready to go. Cut out the front corssmember, UCA/LCa Brackets shock tower etc. Weld on frame reinforcement plates, new shock towers, link mounts etc. Buy a link kit and install the Dana 60. Add transfer case with adapters as needed, get a custom driveshaft built and installed then bam you have a 4x4 SAS with no working guage cluster. nbd

I agree with those who say trade it in. You also get the added advantage of trading up from a 5 year old initial version gen 3.

Joe, remember you’re posting this on a forum where we literally have pages and pages of complaints regarding the difficulty of removing the oil filter housing on these trucks…..

Wouldn't that lead to a big desire to get a nice Dana in the rear with some Cheby leafs or a 4link?

    :bananadead:

    But, it's sooooo tight . . .
