I called Toyota and told them about this issue but I also told them about the vibrating hood issue (failed adhesive to hood stiffener) which is something I know they can fix. I got a case number for these issues. I then called my dealer only to notify them I'd be dropping my truck off next monday regarding this hood issue. I'll bring up the jumping tach at that point and show him the video you posted. I didn't want to overload him. It's so random and I've noticed it so infrequently that I imagine it will be hard for them to duplicate and thus trouble shoot. Going on a big road trip over this long weekend so I'll try to watch for it more closely. I guess I just wouldn't be surprised if the trip meter auto reset and this tach issue were rooted in the same source. Seems like some sort of voltage surge or grounding issue.

It looks like the needles wanted to go to the "otherside"... ;)

this wasnt on a 3rd gen but i have noticed on the 2nd gens after i do an led swap and i put the needles too far down the needles will get stuck to the faceplate and almost do the same as what you just posted on your videos...

maybe when the company making the cluster put the needles on they put them to tight to the faceplace causing it to get stuck and doing that "ticking" motion as you mention.

    just a thought

I had the exact same problem happen to mine this afternoon. Speedo needle was at 60 on the fwy and when I accel and decel the needle jumped up and down like the second hand on a watch. Tic, tic, tic. This is not a mechanical issue, as it cleared up after about 3 mins. The problem is definitely digital. Possibly in the software. It seems like a buffer overrun issue (kind of like when the processor runs out of ram) from digital processor inside either the speedo unit or the ecu. Definitely could be tied in to the trip reset problem. I plan to call Toyota tomorrow and add this to the list of things the regional tech is going to look at during my appt at the dealer on the 15th. Also, keeping a close eye on this problem so I might catch some video of my own of the problem in action to show the tech.

This would tick me off, pun intended. Hopefully it's just a software fix..

There is no reason to wait for the problem to get worst or more frequent. They shouldn't have to 'replicate' the problem to know the problem exist. If they suspect they know what the problem is, just fix it. This is BS, there just pawning you off for a later date. Ihe problem won't fix itself. They choose to fix it later, which sux for you now.

I had one of 2 choices, 1) leave the truck there for an extended period of time so the techs can drive it to see if they can replicate the issue or, 2) keep driving the truck till it's more consistent and then bring it back. I opted for number 2. My service tech also assured me that now that it's in the system, even after my warranty expires, they'll still take care of me. So now I am just playing the waiting game to see if it completely breaks then I'll take the truck back...

Just thought I would share my findings, and if anyone else found a solution to this please share! Tim said he will be keeping an eye on this thread too so hopefully someone else already has a diagnosis....[/QUOTE]

I agree with this. Software related or signal related. Its so rare its going to be hard to duplicate and even if they did the problems doesn't last long enough to investigate. I keep my phone handy if I get a change to record it.

This is one of those issues that needs to be looked at by the group that wrote the code and programming and they can link the problem with possible sources based on their knowledge of how everything works rather than waiting for it to happen.

Who writes the firmware for automotive ECU's? I asked a few manufacturers when I was looking for a job and they all claimed to source them from someone else except Tesla. I would like designing firmware for cars.

Hey shipwreck any chance I could get you tell me what dealership your Tacoma was being serviced by my dealer is telling me no one has ever reported this issue and my video evidence wasn't enough for them to fix anything

Oh Sure, It was mountain States Toyota and I actually left my truck with them since Monday (1\4) I found a bunch of little tings I was concerned about during a 2500 mile round trip to CA and back. The dealer called me yesterday and said they were able to replicate the speedo issue and they are switching out my whole cluster. Its on order now.

That's bullshit. Tell them to do their freaking jobs! If they cant replicate it I can see them not wanting to replace it, but not even open a ticket???? That's crazy. My speedo\tach cluster is getting replaced. I got a 2016 Chevy Impala as a rental car and it SUCKS. Its fast, which is nice, but now we have snow and I have to sit with this POS while I have a 4x4 truck... lol But oh well, it is what it is.

Mine started first, with the speedo only, then I noticed it in the tach and then after a while both did it at the same time.
