Get the 5spd manual if you want to ring the power out of that engine. You can do the cruise control mod yourself and I can't imagine that it would void the warranty. There is a easy how to right up on here by Moe2o4. I don't think you can get the utility and conv. package together.

You can get cruise and remote keys for 480$. It's the Conveniance Package on the SR. Update after driving around today on the 6 speed auto. It tends to upshift too soon with light throttle application. No big deal just use ECT or push the Go Pedal a little more. The sport mode is great. Never had an auto with this mode. Simply pull the shifter over to S mode and click through the gears JUST LIKE A MANUAL with no clutch. I know everyone is saying where you been for the last 10 years, most autos have this feature. Just call me "behind the times", but I'm catching up with you youngsters. Now what's a GoPro? Just kidding, but my wife did ask about the mount and didn't know what a GoPro was...LOL.

This is what I'm looking to get. I wonder how the 4 cyl handles with the 4 door vs the access cab?

The double cab I4 SR works for me. See my previous post and test drive for sure. The SR is a bargain in my opinion.

Would I prefer a manual, no. The auto is super flexible. And FYI I normally prefer a manual trans. I am catching up to modern technology.

Sounds like you really want many of the things the SR doesn't have. Really think about it before you buy and at least consider the SR5. I too looked at an SR the other day that had a MSRP of 31k. Now this is a truck without all those things mentioned in addition to no tinted windows and no fog lights in the lower bumper. The weird thing though is that it had 17" Alloys and that was it. Go figure !
I was referred to a auto broker and got a new 4x4 SR5, 4 cyl, for about the same price as a SR so of course I pulled the trigger. It has the tint, fog lights, leather wrapped steering wheel, a little fancier interior etc. out the door, tax, lic I came out with 32k.
So when I say really think it over I mean it and here's why. I've had the truck for four days and I do really like it, but I already have an appt next week to have , running boards, factory fender flares with mud flaps, alloy wheels and better off road tires. All these extras would have come with the SR5 appearance package. All these fricken after thought OEM parts are going to cost me over 4K. Moral of the story don't do what did and just settle for what you may not really what.

I love my 4cyl, but then I am okay with a manual basic truck, no CC, power windows, etc. Since you say you will be towing your boat, I'd shoot for a v6. It's just a stronger truck to tow. Who knows, maybe one day you'll need the power.

Anyways, just a suggestion, with 25k you can purchase a great used truck with all the bells and whistles you want.

Yeah definitely don't need anything extravagant but cruise control is a must. I may have come off that way in a comment but just wanna make sure were all on the same page. I was just curious how the 4cyl handled with the 6 speed auto trans. This is all I'm looking for in a truck. Tacoma sr with other wheels than steel and cruise control like this one

    .
As a previous owner 10++ Toyota trucks and last one was a TRD/OR 4x4 DC/SB V6, w/ Tow and I never went off road or used back seat.

This time ... I was on the fence between a SR & SR5 and I went for SR5 (for my own reasons) but the SR was a super buy.

My problem was dealers had SR's loaded with "extras" and were almost same price as SR5.

You can't go wrong with a SR if you want an economical truck with a Toyota name plate.

    Stuff, things, this, an ADS
See if you can do a 24 hour test drive and figure it out from there. Sounds like you want at least an SR5 anyway but try both out anyways.

People hate on them because they sometimes are lacking in power, but admittedly they get around just fine and would meet most people's needs. My issue is they get the same gas mileage as a V6, so other than cost I don't see a reason not to get the V6. Maybe any argument can be made for lower running costs on the 4cyl, but I haven't crunched the numbers. I used to have a 98 RAV4, and I was a little tired of anemic 4cyl's. I'm happy with the manual transmission + V6, but I've ridden around in a buddy's manual + 4cyl and think it does just fine in most situations (just not accelerating quickly). I am not really sold on the new automatics though. Lots of people seem to be unhappy with them. I love my manual though :)

The V6 will run you a bit more change-but if I could afford it and were towing a boat, thats what I'd get. If you start adding a hitch, cap, additional people and all the gear, that's a lot of weight. Just my 2 cents. I come from a 4 cyl gen 1 background and just bought the Gen 3 4 cyl 5 speed manual SR. I don't plan on towing anything. If you do go the way of the SR, get the convenience package and then add the intermittent wipes (very easy install for less than 100 bucks)

I thought I might regret getting a 4cyl but I'm loving it so far.
