    Hello tacoworld,

I've been in the search for the perfect tacoma for quite some time now.. However, I've been shying away from the 3rd gen (16') models because I've heard the atkinson engine is subpar at best.. any input? Is the 16' worth it? Or should I stick to the trued and tried 2nd generation. I was curious to see what the pros and cons are on the 16' aside from the refurbished interior and aesthetic exterior.

    Thanks all!

If you are looking for a brand new truck, then it is definetely worth it IMO. I truck shopped for a replacement for my '08 Titan Pro-4x for a few months, and the Tacoma made the most sense for me. Great value, especially considering the price of the competition. Tacomas hold their value very well also. Coming from the Endurance V8, where the majority of the torque came on in the low rpm range, it did take some adapting to the new 3.5. Especially with the new 6 spd auto, you will find it searching for gears quite often in the beginning. I noticed that at around 1500 miles, either I or the truck has adapted and now the truck shifts as expected. Dont forget that this engine does have higher hp, and equivalent torue compared to the 4.0 from previous the previous gen, though at a higher rpm range. Also, even though the trans does shift more (partly because of 6-spd vs 5-spd) the newer 6 speed takes more advantage of the available power. I have owned all 3 generations of the Tacoma and am very sarisfied with this new 2016.

    NO!

Would not recommend until they acknowledge and fix the numerous issues.

Wait until 2017 or 2018. These 16s are $35k vibrators.

No issues with mine so far. I wanted a smaller 4x4, so I got rid of my F150. Test drive and go from there

I went for it and am glad I did. This is by no means a German quality machine, but I dig it. If can afford one and want one, then do it! Just test drive a bunch and see what you like and go from there.

    Good luck!

Never buy the first year of a new build when it comes to cars/trucks. Wait a few years so they can iron out the issue. My mom's 2005 has a slew of issues my Dad's 2008 didn't have.

Another angle on 'worth'. Depends on what you want it to do and your financial status.

For the price of a '16, I'd rather (much rather) have a well kept 1st or 2nd gen combined with a fun used sports car, econo box or hwy cruiser. And I'd still have money left over.

I prefer things slightly more dedicated. All in one choices tend to have too many compromises for me.

If a truck meets every automotive desire you have, you must have new/warranty and dropping the equivalent of a healthy down payment on a home isn't an issue for you, start taking test drives!
