Yup. In a perfect world there would be a public forum where all vehicle owners could list their pro's and con's. Unfortunately the dealers are the only one's with that type of data.

There are too many different consumer sites out there to really get a good 'gauge' on things, especially a new model in the first year.

Before I took delivery of my truck, I ran into another 3rd gen Tacoma owner at the gas station- A DCLB Sport in quicksand. I talked to him for a good 5-10 minutes and he said 'only real complaint is the damned tranny shifting'. This was before the TSB but after I read about the potential for low ATF fluid.

Who knows if he voiced that complaint somewhere. I doubt it.

I totally agree. Not just from one $htty99 person posting over 3k same B/S post. We need all contributions and try to offer ppl solutions for issues they have. This forum has great ppl that come quickly to help others in need with their expertise and experience.
That has been missing ever since this bashing campaign started by one person began to gain some momentum.

Let's get it back on track eh??

Hope that helps, love the great ppl in this forum, thank you brothers!
    Cheers!

There is nothing in the mid size market that compares. The ridgeline is more expensive and doesnt have same capability. The GM twins offer same capability but reliability and resale are still quesionable. Is the tacoma a perfect truck ? Absolutely not but its an excellent base for the future once all the kinks are ironed out.

Imagine if the tacoma was in fact perfect. How would toyota every improve it next year and the year following? Without making the truck more expensive like honda did.

    imho

Not sure the GM twins offer same capability. I'd argue they offer less capability because without significant mods, you probably aren't going to be off-roading them anywhere near the same places as the Tacoma. Now for On Road capability maybe you could say they are the same, yes. Actually I'd maybe argue the GM performs better on road based on my test drive experience -- at least the transmission and motor don't feel as bad.

They drive nice I know, I test drove them plenty. If they had proven reliability and excellent resale data...... I would be driving one now. Toyota will improve the drivetrain issues no doubt, question is how long will it take them.

The gm twins interior suck in comparison and also felt smaller dont know why.

Test drove the Ridgeline black edition for an hour. That truck feels like a jet compared to the taco driving around town. When my truck hits higher rpms than I think its as quick if not quicker than the ridgeline. I know why toyota keeps it in low rpms but in doing so its taking its balls

AW! The TSB, yes. And the transmission being low on ATF was NEVER the problem or solution as we now know, yet it drove some ppl in the forum to obsession or border insanity.
It took but a few moments for me to diagnose it as a software problem and I posted it first.
But the fear of ATF being low, and in the absence of a factory statement (their fault or lack of data) or TSB ppl panicked.
I can’t say I blame anyone, because that’s not the area of expertise for them or their problem.
It is Toyota’s problem to check and maintain all fluid lvl under the warranty.

And Yet, the “experts” here failed to spot and identify the software issue outside of trdohio who also chimed in that he also felt we needed a software solution.
No transmissions have been lost due to being low on ATF since the 2nd gen either was reported low ATF. It is not an issue to worry about, It’s Toyota’s.

Same for the U-joints being dry. Non have reported failures for being low on lube. I have already went thru this extensively and got some angry responses. DO lube your U-joints, but they’re not gonna fall apart if you wait till your 5k to inspect or not.

I once put 300k on a Toyota truck over the span of 16yrs that never saw the stealer for anything, and they never (u-joints no grease fittings) fell apart on me.

And when I couldn’t kill it to get a new one, I sold it, got good money and could have got more! lolo!
But It did need new seats (vinyl cracked) dash cracked, outside 24/7 in inclement weather, a/c needed a temp sensor, body work and paint due to my neglect.

Thus far I think this is the best truck I’ve ever owned and I’m not dismissive of ppl with real issues as I know some are bound to have.

This is my one and only motive here, to disseminate the truth from distorted R/L experiences.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

I LOVE my 2016. I haven't experienced any of the issues others have except for the hood glue separating. I'm so happy I chose this over a 2nd gen

I'm in the "yes, but..." crowd. I haven't had or at least noticed most of the problems some others have, my main reservation is that it feels slightly under powered and doesn't have good gas mileage in exchange. That isn't likely to change much this generation and I feel that it was a big jump in creature comforts from my '06 manual TRD OR. So I am happy with the upgrade, but not ecstatic. Nothing else I tested came close for my tastes though. And, come on... inferno rocks.

If you haven't done the TSB try it should make a big difference, also the ECT & sports mode help a lot when you need to navigate in tight traffic.
Your mileage should be good unless your in constant stop & go or steep hills. I can get a little ove 20.+ MPG doing 78-80. I've seen my RPM drop to just under 2k at that speed from when it was new. Over 82k now.
I would recommend looking at the max psi load stated on the sidewall of your tires vs on the door pillar, it's most always different depending on the tire. So if the side wall says MAX load 44 psi, I'm at 40psi.
I like to keep mine -3-4psi from max stated on side wall for max tire life, handling and MPG. But you'll give up traction (wet roads and such) and maybe some slight comfort.

It is well documented that low tire inflation can lead to possible failure or blow out as they heat up when too low, thus the tire makers always state the rated max load psi on the sidewall.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

    1. You have offered no proof that the ATF being low hasn't caused issues or premature wear to internal components. You have only offered assumptions, conjecture and biased Toyota Fanboy opinions. In fact there are tech articles and evidence from vehicle owners out there that will show you exactly why something as little as 1/2 quart of fluid in FACT CAN make a difference in transmission performance.

    See Exhibits A, B and C:
    A.
    http://www.titantalk.com/forums/tit...alf-quart-atf-makes-all-difference-world.html B. http://www.streetdirectory.com/trav.../transmission_fluid_levels_are_important.html
    C. http://www.broadwaytrans.com/blog/item/34-does-the-level-of-automatic-transmission-fluid-matter.html

    2. Contrary to your biased FanBoy opinion running a vehicle without properly greased driveline components can cause damage and premature wear that would not necessarily result in immediate catastrophic failure. Yet the FACT is that running the vehicle low on fluids or improperly greased CAN impact the longevity of those components. You simply do not know yet what the long term impacts of these oversights by Toyota Quality Control/Manufacturing will be. You're only asserting (with a fanboy flavor) that there's "nothing to see here folks, move along" because you are dismissive of these very VALID issues and concerns.

    3. Your one-off anecdotal examples tell us nothing. The larger sample size of folks here in Tacoma World with issues getting rear differentials replaced in the first 10K - 15K miles tells us much more. There are literally dozens of posters who have shared their Work Orders (myself included) of real world instances where components are having premature wear and/or failure. This includes the Crankshaft Position Sensor failures, Rear Differentials with premature wear and replacement, Braking issues, among others.

    4. You claim you are not dismissive of people with real issues, yet you sprinkle your "turds" of thought on every thread with people's issues. Giving bad advice to try and fix or repair under their own care, and downplaying the problems they are having. You my friend are part of the problem, not a solution or an assistant.

Hey Smitty. I live up on the Mogollon Rim. Used to live in Scottsdale.
My answer is still no. I don't see the quality and engineering escapements worth my funding Toyota.
My biggest complaint for which I wouldn't have know about when purchasing the truck is the transmission. Hence why I call mine a Coma and not a taco. Because the xmsn seems like it's in and out of a coma. Fluid was low. Once the qty was correct, there was only a slight improvement. Sorry Hammer, but from the first day I knew it needed a firmware flash. Haven't had the TSB done yet. Been busy. I hope it will make me like the truck. Another item I wouldn't have noticed prior to purchasing is the lack of reasonable charge capability at the USB port. This was just cheap manufacturing. Years ago I bought a Nissan King cab. In looking at the equivalent Toyota, I noticed they went as far as to put a screen/filter in the fill port for the windshield wash fluid. Nissan didn't. I didn't see it being an important item but it did show that Toyota went a step beyond. I don't see that anymore. I like the 110V option in the truck bed. Would have been nice to have one in the cab also for charging a computer. In case you think I have something against Toyota, I've own a Lexus, Rav 4, Highlander, 4Runner, Camry, access cab pickup and now the Coma TRD Offroad.

As for the idea/philosophy "If you don't like it, sell/trade it." Yeah well, I'm not in a position to throw away $7K. If anyone wants to buy my truck with 12K miles on it for $34K, let me know. That's only a $3K loss which I'll accept.

^ Try the TSB and re-evaluate your "coma"(that's the whole reason it was released).
And the other complaint; USB amperage output . REALLY?!
I know why the 2nd gen guys give us such a bad rap...

@2010gl1800 Good points and can't disagree with any of your assessment. I think you will find the TSB makes a decent improvement to the way the transmission holds gears and shifts a bit smoother. I think the main disappointment for many "truck" drivers is the lack of low end torque for this particular application. It performs more like I would expect a Prius to perform, not something I would use to pull a 4,000LB trailer with -- ECT mode helps with this as well but there is still just something missing from this powertrain.

A person who's opinion I respect passed along their review of the TSB to me and I'll use their words as they are a specialist in the auto industry: "it woke the truck up a lot off the line. Still a little weak but livable. The 2nd to 3rd gear upshift flare has mostly gone away after 50 miles of driving. The truck still has a very noticeable "dead spot" in power from 45 to 55mph. The gear hunting has reduced and the Reverse to Drive delay is gone. The shifting seems a little harsher but it may still be learning. The Kick Down shift takes FOREVER. Overall it is progress."

There is an entire thread on the TSB results that you can view if you would like to see others thoughts on it here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/deleted.441392/

Hey, I'm just saying they cheaped out on the USB. Sure, you can use the power outlet/cigarette lighter but, the adapters typically pop out just enough to not make contact when driving in rough conditions. A USB adapter will not pop out.

The truck is flawed, but for my purposes it is the best currently available. I needed to replace my 2wd Nissan with something having 4wd and could not delay the purchase.

I would, however, hesitate to buy again with the automatic transmission. This is the first time I have bought a vehicle with an automatic, and chose that transmission because I hoped to be still driving this truck after I was 80 years old. If I was few years younger I definitely would have gotten it with a manual transmission, and if the truck was totalled tomorrow I would probably lean toward getting a manual transmission and plan to replace it in 5 - 10 years rather than the 15 - 20 years I normally keep a vehicle.
