This is a stock photo from Toyota's website. Doesn't look like they are adhering to their "zero" weight recommendations.

i was just letting people considering beefing up the tailgate more than i have know..... if they figure out the mechanism of the feather drop, and alter it to have more resistance, they can have their cake and eat it too.
the piece i added was to attempt to prevent the plastic lip from getting torn to shreds, followed by caving in the metal underneath. it works great for my applications and the rest of the tailgate seems to be holding up great except for a few scratches and a broken plastic bushing.

I loaded of my 94 soft tail into my 2013 and drove 1000 miles and bent the tail gate. Its bowed out now. The rear wheel cant weigh more than 300lbs because teh bike isnt but 500lbs but it really put the whammy on it.,

I'd like to see how that mechanism works, as I could probably figure it out myself just by looking at it.

I say based on the no safety margins built into anything to assume it is weak shit just like on the 2nd gens and plate that bitch up if you use it for much of anything. And that EZdown thing you can assume has the same rating as the one on the glovebox and any beef will make it like it isn't even there.......or just do what you want, not give it a thought and just let whatever happen. Stupid that again, you're unable to use a truck how it is meant to be and especially not be able to use it as it is in the company's own advertising enticing you to do so. Shit happens and then the BS "it's your fault for trying to do what commercials show us doing with them" is what you get. Senseless. I'm concerned just to use plated tailgate to climb in and out of truck tent, much less try to run anything up in it to be hauled. I try to use the ends closer to the hangers and hope for the best.

Why do they make short beds and bed extenders if the tailgate can't support the weight? At the price of a new painted tailgate these days you think they would have made them stouter. Time for some ribbed for your pleasure carbon fiber and epoxy lamination's.

New tailgate seems about twice as strong as the gen 2. As well all know, the gen 2 tailgates were prone to being bent fairly easily. Gen 3 tailgate seems much more stout.

A well designed Carbon Fiber tailgate should be able hold well over 250lbs. It will also weigh allot less, better MPG and overall power to weight ratio. But it will cost you a pretty penny.

Here's an interesting read on how a Carbon tailgate was designed to reduce weight and increase strength.

    http://www.plasticstoday.com/articles/composite-carbon-fiber-tailgate-slashes-weight-20141013a

The real key here is weight distribution. This guy had it all wrong, but it looks like they were in a pinch and had to get the bike out of there.

And this tailgate is holding up just fine

My 550lbs. snowmobile (including a full tank of fuel) has been hanging out the back of my 16 Tacoma since I bought it in November. I have a ramp to load the sled, and a small piece of aluminum that spreads some of the weight from the tailgate to the bed. I've been rather careful with it and have not bent the tailgate. There are a lot of 2nd gen Tacos around here with bent tailgates from sleds & dirt bikes, hopefully 3rd gen is beefier!!

How may folks here had to deal with the 1st gen tailgate? My 2nd gen was a big improvement over that. If the third gen is even more stout I am going be able to PARTY on my new '16.

Can you get an average street bike in the short bed diagonally without the rear tire resting on the tailgate?

Picture it breaking everytime you jump up into it and having a massively bruised tailgate for weeks.

The tailgate to lower easily is most likely don using a torsion bar through the tailgate where it pivots. It is how Ford did it. It is a square bar all the way through the tailgate, twisted so that the steels natural tendency to want to spring back allows the twisting to help lower... They use the same engineering to build axles for trailers instead of the old school leaf spring.

My old 72 Porsche 914 had torsion bars up on the front wheels. Always amazed how that worked so well.

I use to pull a dual axle hydro dump trailer and had a 18' featherlite aluminum dual axle car trailer. Both had the torsion axles, pulled so smoooooooooooth.
