2016 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 vsc or tracs off problem?

    Hi,
    Driving on dirt roads, I stopped and started on a mild incline. A warning light came on above the tachometer. Not sure if it was the Tracs off light or the VSC light as it blinked so rapidly it was just an orange blur, this was accompanied by a horrible rachety noise, like shredding plastic gears. It was only on for about 2 seconds. I cannot find anything in the manual or online? I am assuming this is not normal?
