My question is this.... what the hell are the techs complaining about in the first place? Those guys have a job and are making at a minimum of $50/hour to test drive a vehicle, hook it up to a computer, test drive again and do some paperwork.

To be honest, I think that Toyota is laying the complaint blame on the techs because it looks bad if the company complains about providing a “free” warranty service to customers. Just my thoughts.

 

Please also be aware that a dealership may bill Toyota $50 an hour for warranty work BUT the tech almost certainly doesn't get more than $20-$30 per hour for the labor. Markup on labor and parts is how the dealership makes the service side profitable. The service writer, car shuttle people, shop cleaner & cashier all have to get paid from the labor rates charged on a labor only ticket like this.

My heart does not bleed for any dealership but before we throw the techs under the bus please consider the whole picture. A $30 / hour tech will get paid $12 to do this work on your truck. If it takes an hour and they only get 0.4 hours billable they just cut their pay in half for the time it takes to complete this task.

An experienced tech will drive around the parking lot, attest that they feel the issue and complete the job in the allotted time and move on to the next job. This is being smart instead of wasting time arguing about the request and only hurting themselves in the long run. This is the difference between a smart tech and a new tech that hasn't learned the ropes.

 

This biggest problem IMHO is not with the dealers or techs necessarily in this case. Its that Toyota released a massive update that all trucks will benefit from. Period. Yet, the instructions given to dealers make it sound as though trucks only will benefit from the update if they exhibit a couple of unique issues with very specific symptoms (the 40-50mph surge / stumble at high altitudes) when in fact the new update addresses the roughness of shifting, racing to higher gears, clunking, stumbling and hesitations (that are dangerous).

If Toyota had approached this like a recall (unlikely) or a broader multi-symptom TSB it wouldn't be as hard as it's been on folks but as-is folks are left to fight or do it themselves.

Luckily, we know a guy working on the next gen tune to encompass Toyotas improvements AND the power and predictability we've come to love from a tuned Taco!

Correct, but that tech gets MORE money for customer pay than warranty. So if he ends up getting $20-$30 an hour for warranty, he's making $45-$55 for CP.

 

I just can't believe that a twin turbo kit is being developed and people are still talking about dealership rates!

 

My only concern with a TT setup on the 2GR is that it is an open deck design. So how much boost can it handle before the top of the cylinder begins to spread apart or cracks?

You might try Mono if your using .net to see if your code works on a Mac/Linux machine.

As for the Mac not being for dev's, . If you code for unix/linux servers, a Mac is a much better machine imo. Under Windows I need to use VM's to have a test environment.

Not concerned at all about the block. It will handle plenty of abuse.

I think he put a price tag on the "stage 1" kit at 5-6k, the higher end kit with forged internals is probably looking at 8k
