I watch mine via OBDFusion, which I imagine measures line temp and it also stays 190-200 and is almost always within 5 degrees of the water temp. Last trip out to Moab when I hit the Utah line and used more skinny pedal than I normally do, I saw it break into the 215 range. I was NOT a fan.

I NEED to come get with you and do a flush on mine. And from the sound of it, pin my extra cooler.

Hmmm. Wonder why the Toyota engineers designed that T-stat to open at 190F...
    Drive that sucker.

There is pan temp and TC temp. The TC temp will always be higher under load because you are shearing the fluid in the viscous coupling that is your TC. Within 5 degrees of engine water temp is likely as good as it gets for pan temp.
I’m not saying that lower temps are not generally better for lubricants but these temps are not excessive.

I assumed it was like temp and that the TC temp would be even higher which is why I didn’t like what I saw. The app I use doesn’t say where the temp is measured so I’m not sure. I just don’t like to see it. I’m not saying it’s bad based on science, but my old school brain says no bueno.

I feel ya. I'm ancient. Get you a scan gauge II. Displays both temps. You would dig it. You have to "program" it for those channels but it's easy.
    https://www.amazon.com/ScanGauge-Automotive-Computer-Customizable-Real-Time/dp/B000AAMY86/ref=sr_1_3?crid=7ID0K2DLITMG&keywords=scangauge+2&qid=1573006960&s=electronics&sprefix=scan+gauge%2Celectronics%2C309&sr=1-3

EDIT: most of the color in your ATF is due to the wearing of the material on the bands on the clutch packs. Dump and fill every 30k and roll on brother.

So it will actually warm up to operating temp in cold weather conditions. Between the added cost and complexities, you can bet your ass they didn't just decided it needed a thermostat for no good reason.

With all that said, I wouldn't be opposed to pinning the thermostat if I was headed out for a long haul and was pulling a trailer, but for everyday driving in cold weather conditions, I'd say it's not the greatest of ideas.

    Precisely.

Any members running 19800 91 octane on 04B31 please share your thoughts. And 19800 87 octane as well. I did not give it much time after getting used to 19770 and flashed back after about 250 miles because I missed the punch and smooth and predictable downshifts. I'm growing weary of paying for 91 octane but absolutely love how the truck drives. Granted, in 4Lo the tip in is challenging but I don't do that as often as I'd like. I love Mat's idea of 19770 with a 19800 throttle map for first gear.

The brown color was likely not temp related but clutch material which is quite normal. I have seen Toyota trannies go many hundreds of thousands of miles with the fluid never being changed. Synthetic atf can survive well above 200 degrees and still be doing its job. The tundra transmission sees temps that high all the time and is a proven transmission capable of going to at least 500k without a fluid change. The old saying is true, just because it’s black doesn’t mean it’s still not motor oil. Same for transmission fluid. Just because it’s dark red or even brown does not mean it still isn’t good fluid.

It's going to exceed the threshold for fluid measuring temp (98-115) unless your trip distance is down the driveway and back. If you are sub-zero for normal ambient temps then pinning would not be a good idea. Not sure what cold is for you - I keep mine in the garage so even freezing (32) equates to internal block temps of mid 40's and by the time you let it warm and drive a 1/4 block it is up to 70. Viscosity not an issue at either temp.

And just to get back on topic....NEED MORE 2.0 SOON!

You have to download it from the website. Pretty sure 2.0 EROM download doesnt work from the app.
