OP - I'm in. Trading my auto for a manual shortly, but happy to send you the ECU for bench flash when I have it. Prefer that I can reverse it at home if need be. Will you hold the base tune by ECU/VIN # at your location? I have had MANY previous vehicles ECU tuned, but all of them German, and know that the ability to go back to stock during the warranty period would be nice to have. Happy for a 91+/93 octane map.

Any thoughts on your ability to create maps for forced induction? Seems the Atkinson cycle tuning lends itself to significant potentials for forced induction - especially in our problematic low-end.

Thanks and ignore the naysayers, they know not of what they speak.

What is Ford doing with the count? Denying warranty claims? That's weak evidence of anything imo.

Either way, this guy mentioned manipulating the checksum value to mimick OEM checksums. If they are doing that , then they seem to "own" the ECU. That byte would be trivial to set back.

The excitement is unbearable if this can be done at home and is undetectable by dealership during service.

We stay away from that because so much of their maps are wildly incorrect. we find the maps ourselves through our own investigation

as far as we are aware there is no flash counter.

I'd want to be pretty certain on that. Most of the ECUs I've encountered lately have been incrementing a discrete memory location with updates...

Some even use secondary memory locations to indicate access with an authorized tool... when the counts don't match... ruh rho.

There are literally thousands of places these counters can be hidden.

I'm in on this. I feel like I'm fighting the engine when I mash the pedal.

You're fighting the transmission not the engine.

There is room for improvement on the engine but the lions share of that lugging, dead pedal feeling is because this transmission was mapped so atrociously to the engine it's paired with.

Well they estimate 280hp to the wheels. That's quite an increase. If they can come close to that and fix shift points I'm in. Well see what the dyno runs say.

I like the shift points, press the little pedal and it down shifts and holds gear to redline. Want more HP and Torque and don't care about 91+ or MPG. I know the engine is capable of more because Lexus.

oh wow just seeing this. I, for one is sooo in. I don't even care if they brick my taco's ECU.
I can't bear my taco's low end sloppy drag :ballchain:.
I am an EE and I work in similar field where I write firmware and flash builds to our asics every day.
Good job OP. I am the one who recently reached out to you by email with an ultimatum.
I live in So Cal too, so you're only an hour away from me.
If you want one more truck, you can keep mine for as long as you like. Have at it.

I also don't mind the shift points,so much. My complaint (if thats what we are doing) is the occasional weird throttle response and the EPA restrictions neutering my engine.

thanks I'll get back to you later today.

Also if there is a 4.0L / 2nd gen tacoma market for tuning..these ECUs are 100x easier to do, we may be able to fast track a way for DIY tuning options. (for people who want to tune their own trucks). We don't have the time at the moment to write custom tunes for many more trucks, but we can do DIY kits, where you can access the ECU maps (ignition, fuel, cam, throttle, etc) yourself and tune.

You're also fighting throttle control at the same time, so you are fighting engine output. I have a MT and the throttle control is frustratingly obvious at times. I'm 99% sure that the throttle limiting is increased when the clutch pedal is being released so that at times of heavy throttle input the throttle is more noticeably regulated and is "let go" harder when the clutch pedal is fully released. Makes accelerating from a stop quickly or when towing unnecessarily difficult to have a smooth engagement. I've been testing it with the traction control turned off and it seems like it might help "numb" the ECU's control some but I'm still unsure of this effect.
