Only 3k miles on my 18', but I don't believe I've heard this noise y'all have been talking about. Is there some other criteria, like age or model? Or am I just not paying attention?

Yep! I had a 15 i4 5 4x4 that I think I enjoyed driving more. So it is not a power thing. I felt the same way, they said it would "learn"
It seems to go through phases that just make it annoying to drive. I hate the way it drives(engine and transmission wise).

It's pre-detonation of the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder. It's a very bad thing that changing fuel and ignition timing resolves. OVTune has altered the mixture and ignition to prevent it from happening like it does on the Toyota stock map.

It isn't 'normal', it's a sign of a bad tune. Mat fixes this.

Up here in Alaska, I have never had the issue of knock.. Might be due to the air being colder or having 100% gasoline, but 87s has never pinged for me.

Ok so we are clear here, Matt when is this noise happening?
I was assuming its the loud engine at idle and they all do that. Also it would not be pre detonation.
My stock truck has zero detonation no matter the fuel grade.

I had no idea about the 'learning' til I started reading these threads. I'm a n00b, but I can't really think of a good reason for it in my life. I'd MUCH rather just have a piece of equipment that behaves in a known and reliable fashion even if it it's quirky, and I will do all the learning and adapt my driving style to the piece of equipment, thank you very much. I'd much rather have a known factor than something that constantly changes because it's trying to be "smart"

So, a question for all of you who have experience with the tune, does anyone have a recommendation for a computer tablet or similar device to install it? I know diddly squat right now, but if I'm going to get the tune I know I'll teach myself about it in the future. Just kinda want to "future proof" myself if I do drop coin on something specifically for this project. I think some of you have mentioned having the tablet or what have you plugged in all the time to monitor things? Don't want to buy something I think will work only to find out down the road that "product ___" would have been a better choice... I do have a laptop with windows 10, but I think a tablet or pad would be easier, plus I could load it with maps and other vehicle related goodies for if/when I get off the beaten path (and cell signal).

Edit: And it'd be nice to be able to switch between octane tunes on the fly if I end up somewhere with lower grade than what I was currently running

All the cheap recommeded computers and tablets are at the bottom of the page in the products discussed box. If you are on your phone it may not pop up.

If you have a laptop with windows 10 no need to go out and buy another product as that laptop will work

    It's a combination of a few things.
    Here is what we've changed:
    1. Direct injection fire timing
    2. Direct injection fuel pressure based on load and rpm. Below 2800 RPM pressure targets are much less than peak pressure. By modifying higher load pressure, and injection timing, we are seeing much better and more stable ignition (aka better efficiency)
    3. Rigorous cleaning of ignition. i've taken 100+ logs driving at various speeds, throttle, etc and have cleaned the ignition tables in cycles.
    4. Valve timing

Here is an image of stock v 1.05 current ignition.
I'll let you guys guess which is 1.05

I just figured a tablet or some such would be easier to transport, and I could designate it as my "truck/trip" device. Originally bought my laptop for photography stuff, but don't know how much longer I'll have it or how long it'll stay functional. If I do buy a dedicated device for the tune, I definitely don't want something super expensive just in case something happens to it on one of my trips. But essentially, any of the windows tablets will work? No recommendations on # of ports or internal memory or expandable memory?

Sure. Just seen many people here who have a Mac and have asked that question.

But any cheap windows tablet or comp will work.

@OVTune , have you done this remotely for a M/T truck as well? Or is it even necessary?

Looking at the graphs, why would toyota even consider that efficient? Is it due to changing the maps as we drive(stock)?
I notice on my ultragauge, even at constant speed it is jumping up and down.

and being as cheap as I am, I am toting my desktop out to my truck when I flash mine lol

Note I am keeping my desktop in there until I get my registration and files too so I don't have to take it out there twice.

I think Toyota really went overboard developing this calibration. Imagine.. lets add 6 ignition maps! and 10+ compensators to those, and 4D tables! and 32+ 4D throttle and inverse throttle tables to calculate air (rather than using a maf and SD... because this truck doesn't even have SD via MAP). Then lets add a temperature dependent ceompensator to those throttles!. Then add 1 billion shift tables, 16 main torque calculation tables, 2 different engine torque calculators, 4 different torque tables in ECT / S, Then a billion downshift tables.

Then lets figure out how to make it work.

It's kind of like how ford does their new stuff except fords strategy actually works
    Maybe I'll apply to Toyota.
