I own a 2016 Tacoma with tpms. I bought a set of matching spare aluminum wheels, with stock tires, from a 2017. The tpms sensors were hidden within, so I took them to Discount To to have the ids scanned.
My stock tpms sensors are 7-digit codes, consisting of letters and numbers. The codes the guy read me at Discount Tire were 9-Digits, all numbers. Did he give me the wrong codes, or did they increase - and make incompatible - codes between 2016-17?

TPMS sensors can have either a Decimal(all numbers) or a Hexadecimal(numbers and letter) Sensor ID code. Either will work as long as the sensor itself is compatible with the vehicle. It looks like the sensors for the 2016-2020 Toyota Tacoma are the same so you should be good to go.

A side note, the Toyota dealers sometimes have issues with 9 digit sensor ID codes, however our stores are always happy to help. Thank you for stopping by so we could read the codes for you.

Thank you again Doug. I just got a programming cable and was hoping to enter the codes, myself, but the Toyota software only appeared to support seven digits. I'll swing by a location and let them give it a try.

You may need OEM TPMS. I had some provided by the tire/wheel distributor that were “compatible” but were in fact not. Cost me a remount, rebalance ant the new TPMS and the tire co charged me to ship the wrong ones back.

    My pleasure,

A quick thing to check for is on the 4 sensor ID codes if there is a common denominator between all 4 of them, for example they all start with "04". Drop the 04 and just use the last 7 digits, or if they all end in "67" try dropping it and using the first 7 digits.

Depending on the manufacturer of the sensors in your new set, the Bartech tool our stores use may be pulling part of the serial number attached to the sensor ID code rather than just the ID code itself. Or in all honesty the tech may have pulled the serial number rather than the ID code. But you would be able to verify that because all the numbers would be completely identical.
