Jca1386, great spin , you are on target, thanks for expressing the sentiments of many Tacoma faithful stricken with drivetrain issues. In reference to taking back units, not a normal practice, the dealer takes the hit not Toyota. The lemon law buy back is a very long and drawn out process, too many moving parts, too many delays. Keep on Toyota, backed on many posts, Toyota has elected in some cases to present an extended service agreement to 100,000 miles, good luck to all concerned about their Tacomas. Many feel as we do, then there are those that see Toyota riding on a great white stallion.

My 2017 has "different" transmission issues from my 2016... and yes, my dealer basically did a 1 for 1 trade on my 2016 because I was having so many issues.

Getting the new trans update done today. I've had no issues with the truck except the gear hunting mostly when using cruise on the highway which is aggravating. Other than that I like my ride.

You selected a compassionate dealer, rather unusual, good luck. If you swapped keys and no money changed hands other than title, fees and any applicable taxes, you did great!

What are you experiencing? It seems more of the Offroads are experiencing these issues?

My new 2017 feels like the trans is slipping sometime when I step on the gas. Very unnatural feeling. It will rev high with 0 acceleration and the suddenly grab the gear or down shift. Is this just the trans coming out of overdrive? It's got less the 2000 miles on it. Anyone else have this issue?

Toyota of SLO updated mine with Rev 1 on Saturday November 19, 2016.

If you have been there, you can only imagine how difficult it was for me to accomplish this feat. They suck so bad....

Scheduled an appointment to get the TSB done next week. First I explained my symptoms and said I had , had the truck in a few weeks ago and said i was told it was normal and nothing wrong. I said I had heard there was a TSB for the tranny. When asked if they had heard of the TSB they said , they hadn't had any 2017's in for it. I said it's for the 16's too. They didn't ask to see the TSB paperwork .Just makes me scratch my head a little that two dealerships iv'e talked to now claimed to know nothing of the TSB. I know it's not the end of the world , just want my truck to drive the best it can.

SO....... I sent an e-mail to Toyota corporate regarding my transmission being two quarts low. In the e-mail I requested an extension to my powertrain warranty in the event my transmission was damaged due to lack of fluid. To my surprise I got a reply e-mail within 24 hours inviting me to conduct a phone conference with a representative from Toyota corporate. During the conversation the representative stated that as long as there is no signs of abuse or neglect Toyota will stand behind their transmission. I was urged to keep any and all service records especially those that address powertrain maintenance /repair. I was also told that in the event of a mechanical issue, involving the transmission, to present my service records to have the current repair coverage evaluated based on passed events. If I am not satisfied with the coverage of the repair I am to contact Customer Care and they will further investigate the matter. After the rep was done spitting out the legal portion of the conversation he basically broke it down to: Dealerships can request warrant coverage of a repair at their discretion. If you have an issue after your warranty period and you present the documentation and your vehicle doesn't look like it was used in a stunt show the dealer will request a warranty repair/replacement.

Good luck with that. It's hard enough to get warranty work performed during the warranty period, much less after.

It may take a while for the Lemon law process , I did mine in 1991 for a Ford . What did happen is the value they owed me was based upon the mileage of the Ford at the First attempt to fix the problem . The 10,000 miles after the process started I put on the truck were free for me and cost Ford . The Value was set at the 2000 mile mark when I took it in the first time ! So let them drag their feet , it will cost them and not you in the end . I had to pay was something like 15 cents a mile for my use which was 2000 x .15 or $300 or so, and i drove the truck for over a year. This was in Wis. . I have not owned a Ford since !
    PS a new 1991 F150 4x4 6 cyl. 300cu.in. 5 spd. manual XLT was 15K total .

It might be the torque converter locking and unlocking. Did you have your trans fluid checked?

Does it only do it when it's cold? If so see above TSB fixes it. If it does it all the time then that's probably a completely different issue and your best bet is to take it to the dealer and have it looked at.

Print out the TSB and show it to the service advisor. This way they know you're an informed owner.

I picked up my Tacoma today after having the new "Revision 1" transmission update at 3360 miles. I had the original update done in July at 1550 miles. The original update was very good, but the new revision _really_ made a difference! It now drives and responds the way it should, they way I expect it to.... at least so far with the limited test I've done today (30 miles or so).

Others have reported a noticeable improvement with the revision 1 update, and I agree. I took a copy of the new revision 1 TSB with me and mentioned I had the original update applied in July and they gave me absolutely no push back on applying the new update. They even asked to keep it overnight to manually check the tranny fluid. They said it was 1/4 quart low, even though the repair order said "1.0 L" (liter).

This was all done with my first 6 month/5,000 mile Toyota Care service.

Do you happen to have the TSB number for the latest transmission flash? I had the original one done also and like you said, it did help. It still left a lot to be desired though.

I showed the TSB in my hand and they didn't ask to see it. Going to have to drop truck off the night before and going to leave TSB with some notes for them in front seat....i'm not feeling the enthusiasm from this dealer

I've been in twice - purchased Oct now @ 2k . First time, at 1k, they said the trans is sealed and can't check the fluid. Also; A factory guy was there and said it just needed to be driven more, it will break in.

Second time, different dealer, they checked and said it does not have the TSB. So they said I should now schedule to have it done. I can't do it for about a week.

So for now I've used ECT mode in traffic. What I noticed in ECT, is that it often gets hung in 3rd gear and won't shift up. When I drop it in Select, it displays that it's in 4th. If I down shift, it says it's in 3rd, but it never down shifted. If I then shift up it says 4th, nothing changes, shift again it says 5th, but it's still in 3rd. Anybody else see this ?
