When you shift to Sequential mode, 4 is the default option if you're at such a speed that S4 is deemed appropriate. It may be S5 if you're going faster. S4 is not to say you're in 4th, it's saying 4th is the maximum gear allowed. If you are in 3rd you will stay in 3rd. If you shift to 5, and are in 3rd you are still going slow enough the transmission will not shift into 5th gear.

It will only upshift if you are going at such a speed that it makes sense to.

    So sequential is like tiptronic?

Before I had the original TSB back in July/August, this is how mine was acting. It didn't seem to care too much as I shifted around, despite what speed I was going. Since the TSB, it's been much better.

I was in last week due to a hesitation/fuel cut when flooring it from a dead stop, they opened up a case with Toyota, but I haven't followed up yet to see what they say, as they currently have no remedy. Hopefully that's just another update/flash that will fix it.

Yes, many different names by different manufacturers, but sequential allows you to up or downshift.

There are really two ways to take advantage of it.

    1) let it do the shifting for you. You define the maximum gear allowed (S4, S5, S6) and the transmission operates with "sportier" shift points than drive all the way up until the maximum gear and will then go no higher.

    2) you do the shifting. By selecting S1 at a stop, you will stay in first gear accelerating until you choose to upshift into S2, then S3, and so on. Because you're defining the highest gear at every given speed, it's functioning similar to a manual transmission. You then downshift, sequentially, to force the tranmission into a lower gear at high speeds to either engine brake or define a passing gear.

I wonder if after a TSB, you could essentially program the trans how you wanted it to shift by putting in that mode the whole time while it's in learning mode

Unfortunately that's not generally how I've seen it work. While ECU learning is occuring (fuel trims, timing adjustments for knock correction) transmission learning won't occur if you're manually controlling the gears. It needs to see road conditions and shift points it's picking initially, checking your throttle input to adapt to how you are reacting to the transmissions decisions.

It's a really slow process and takes thousands of miles to adjust throttle sensitivity and shift points to try and anticipate how you're wanting it to shift.

Same TSB number, just add "Rev 1."

Has anyone with Rev 1 noticed if the surging at low speed (happens to me when cold and backing out usually) is resolved/improved?

That kills me. Well at least I put the idea in their heads so maybe that made it easier for you.

I've generally had good luck with the Toyota of SLO service department.

not much of an improvement in the surge dept, but the shifting is somewhat better so far. I had mine done Monday but haven't put enough miles on it yet to see if it reverts to the old way again. I hate to brag but yesterdays drive was very nice, drove like my 2015 4 runner limited.

Reving it around 3000 RPM 45 MPH = still No Shift

Yes - I notice a short fuel cut type condition in ECT 2nd to 3rd.

My truck clunks into first gear as it downshifts from second nearly every time I come to a stop. I also have what feels to be a slip into and out of neutral when I'm driving through parking lots between 5-10 mph. By the way, I got the rev 1 update on Monday and had my trans fluid checked. I went back there with them when they pulled the plug so I know they checked it manually. The update made an awesome difference on the smoothness of the downshift... until it shifts from second to first.

It should not be holding third gear at that speed in S4 unless you're on the throttle to maintain speed on an incline. If you're just cruising with very little load, it should upshift to 4th gear. If it's not, you may have a mechanical concern with your transmission (fluid level, hardware problem, etc)

This has happened 3 days in a row now to my truck. 3k on the highway and were holding gears if i stab the pedal or let off we stay in these same gear. That happens in S4,S5,S6 plain old D with and without the ECT on...no call back from the dealer today so we now call back corporate and see what their plan of action is.

I am going to take it in soon. Just sucks with my busy work schedule. I live in Florida so "cold" doesn't really exist. It didn't happen at first and now its more frequent.

Spoke with corporate today...unbeknownst to me apparently my local dealer had already contacted a field rep and told corporate that he spoke to me and had scheduled an appointment. The rep was VERY surprised when I told her I haven't heard from the dealer since monday...she got them on the line and we had a 3 way call and confirmed that a certain day worked for me. I also asked how long it would take and the answer I got was " well, he's going to have to drive it, plug it into the computer and then check a few things so Id say a few hours" my reply was " I assume I'll be getting a loaner, this is the 3rd time the truck has been in in as many months and I don't want to sit in the waiting room"

Let's see what rental car they give me....

Sorry I didn't mean the ambient temperature. Generally speaking the "flare" only happened immediately after the first time through the gears once the truck had cooled. I think maybe you have something else going on.
