2016 TRD Off Road stuck in 4 hi blinkin' thinkin' mode...
Driving on the beach engaged 4 hi when I went to go back into 2WD the indicator light was blinking along with the bsm unavailable error. Washed the truck to clear debris, turned off and restarted several times. Drove slowly in reverse, tried switching from 2WD to 4 HI...Any suggestions?

Front and rear tires at different pressure ??

Are you on hard packed dirt or pavement ???

The only thing that’s worked for me is backing up straight, shifting from park to reverse without moving and shifting from forward or reverse to park. Just leave selector in 2h while trying combinations. I’ve read that a few guys have had this happen on 3rd gens and most were related to having some contact with water in one way or another. Maybe a flaw in an unsealed connector. I do know it’s very important that the system gets exercised monthly.

Messed with it several times in the sand before leaving the beach and hit the car wash

My wife’s old 2nd gen 4 runner did the same thing and had to take it to the dealer to get it unstuck. Solenoids were replaced under warranty and ever since I try to exercise on a regular basis. The only thing I may suggest trying is put it in park and keep engine running and rock the truck back and worth a little. If that doesn’t work try universal reset and disconnect battery? I hate that they do this!!!

Hope you get it unstuck before then. I’ll be watching patiently.

Well, the reverse thing isn't applicable to this vehicle. That's for vehicles with automatic locking hubs. These use a sliding coupler on the passenger side driveshaft.

I don't know what "bsm unavailable" means.
Is the vehicle actually stuck *in* 4WD? Or is it just a blinking light?

It's stuck in 4WD with the blinking light.
BSM is the blind spot monitor, that's resolved.

The only time mine ever got stuck *in* 4WD, it was resolved by rebooting the 4wd ecu with the knob in 2HI, and that's done by key-off, key-on.
Sounds like you may need to check it out with a multimeter. The wiring diagram (use google to find it) will give you an idea what the sensor states should be.

Will it work with push button start? No key.

Good question. And one I don't know the answer to.
But one thing you CAN do, is take it a step closer towards the battery. Try disconnecting the positive terminal on the battery for a few seconds and see if that resets it.

If not, your 2016 should still be under warranty, right?
