Frame is all new, different steel that now has bolstering ( gussets for strength ), all new All Aluminum Engine, cab is different ( thicker materials with new floor for sound deadening as well as the interiors of door frames ), all new wiring, all the creature comforts of the Tundra come in the Tacoma now.

The Japanese aren't stupid and won't kill their cash cow, if it looks the same it's because they're sticking to a formula that works.
Know this, this is a complete redesign that has the appearances of the outgoing generation.

Here's a Super White that's modded just like my 2nd Gen is now . . . Credit to TW Member BeePee for his shopping skills . . .

This is my concern as well, although they are going up a cog in the trannies (6 speeds each), so perhaps 1st is REAAALLLLY low.

I still don't like it. The 1GR was almost a perfect truck V6 - death and taxes reliable tuned to have all the grunt down low below 3000 RPM. Why do I get the feeling this new one (2GR-FE? FSE?) will require one to wind it up a bit more before it feels like it's pushing?

Grill looks like they were inspired by the fins on the back of a window air conditioner :\ It's awful.

    Another thing:

These photoshopped "modded" mockups are hilarious...tone the 37" tire equivalents down to realistic sizes please.

    No significant mods....yet
The dog in the picture above has an underbite. Which I can see that being a close perspective of the front end as the plastic piece lining under the grille has those vertical, squared indentations that look like teeth and they protrude out from the front end.

Bucktooth on the other hand should look like this:

One thing is for sure the aftermarket people who are "ambitious" will make a mint off the 2016. New grill, some thoughtfully placed LED lightbars, retrofitted and blacked in tails and headlights will make it a shit ton better looking. That is what it will take to be balanced to me. Stock look hands down front end of existing looks better, however I have become convinced that with some money and effort the new gig could look good. Too bad yota didn't simply make a raptor style front end and some more thought process there'd be a lineup for pre orders now. Interior looks decent and the other changes so far look decent to. Just that front end.... Just bad....

And if I want torque while engine load is low? Like crawling or getting a tow started or recovering another vehicle?

I guess re-gearing will remain the order of the day. I wonder if people will take the diffs lower than 4.56 on equivalent tire sizes if the powerplant isn't getting it done at slow speeds.

Maybe it will have to grow on us? I didn't like the '12 front end when it first came out, but started to love it after seeing it for a few months. Then I bought one!

It will more than likely default to Otto cycle and only go Atkinson cycle when you've let off the throttle or decreased throttle position. If you are increasing throttle, wouldn't it make sense that the engine would go to the mode that increases power/torque? I'd imagine it only goes Atkinson cycle when you've hit some set criteria in vehicle speed, engine load, throttle position, etc.

I'd rather much preferred the Predator-style front end that the 4runner and Lexus has than this Tonka truck front end that merely looks like a facelift instead of a full new redesign. The tailights are terrible, but at the TRD O/R doesn't have the stupid front apron thing underneath the bumper like the Limited blue truck does.

Perhaps, but I liked the '12 when it came out. This one not so much. To me the grill looks glued on, like an afterthought, or a piece that just happened to be laying around the shop when they were putting it together. It looks disproportionate where I feel the '12 actually improves on the proportions of the '11.

Truck looks 10x better in the Off Road version with black-out trim. I love the sand color. Interior looks great and a manual transmission is available. Engine will be fine as it is a Toyota.

That is it, I am buying a 2016 double cab Off Road.

I think you two may have a misunderstanding of the definition of "engine load". It's essentially (actual air intake/max air intake).

Low-load situations (i.e. very little throttle, TB mostly closed) with high torque application are highly desired in a number of work truck scenarios (vehicle recovery, offroad, towing/carrying loads, etc.). It is not always an option to peg the throttle if you're not getting the torque you desire. It sacrifices control.

No, people who buy them for road use (98%) won't notice the difference. Those of us who actually use a truck in all likelihood will.

As a general rule, I'd rather have a less "technologically advanced" motor that's just fettled to give you the low end twist. Fuck the mileage.

I think I'll be trading in my '14 for a new '16/'17 TRD Off-Road Access Cab 4x4 in a few years, and then immediately buying a new grill & wheels! ;)
