I’m sorry. But this WHOLE conversation is somewhat handicapped by:

    1. no mention of prices for the two options.
    2. Photos of either taco
    3. Details of what “do-dads” are on the 3rd gen

    1. If it’s a matter of 2016 is 20k$. And the 2015 is 18$k. That is different than 2016 is 30k$ and the 2015 is 22k$.

    2. Photos are worth ….. well,
    You get it.

3.. A full suspension upgrade 10k miles ago is pretty good.

if the do-dad is a dash cam and a roof rack… not so much.

These trucks are bullet proof if taken care of. Personally, I would be spooked with 200K miles regardless of the vehicle, however, that is only 33K a year for a 6 year old truck. Take them both to a mechanic if you can and have them checked over.

Depends on how well it’s been taken care of and they type of mileage. I would take a truck with 200k highway miles over a truck with 100k city miles any day. Keep in mind 200k isn’t isn’t actually that old for the 2gr. These engines routinely make it to 300k or more with proper maintenance. Spark plugs should have been replaced at least 3 times. At least 2 serpentine belts as well. U joints, wheel bearings and ball joints may need attention. Drivetrain could last another 100-150k miles easily.

I would probably NOT consider the 3rd gen, the miles are too high.
I would consider the 2nd gen, but check kbb.com for a fair price.

I traded a RAV4 with 185K miles for my Tacoma. The RAV would have needed a new clutch, brakes, tires and probably a timing belt (no timing chain on my year). At the time I was taking time off from work to take my elderly Mother to appointments and needed a super reliable vehicle. I always bet on a lower mileage Toyota regardless of the point spread.

Go for the lower mileage 2015, no questions asked. Pay up for the last model year with reasonable mileage and most of the kinks of an already reliable truck worked out. As someone else mentioned earlier on, after you put plenty of miles on the truck yourself, the value difference will start to level out more. I'm partial to 2nd gen trucks, but still...

I would not take a chance on that OR God knows what it has been through. To me it would turn into a money pit repairs, repairs forever. No thanks, I have seen it with friends who bought OR not just Toyota but other brands and they regretted it ever since. just saying.

At 200k, i would assume that third gen was a "good one" that didn't have major issues and is fine. If you look on here, the blown 3.5v6's we blowing at lower miles. Most Toyota motors are good for 350k+

I'm a second gen fan, just because i don't like electronics and accessories (i always buy manual tranny basemodel vehicles)

You have a hard decision to make.

Without having a good walk and inspection around both vehicles, we really can't help you decide. If they are both good tacomas, then it's down to a personal choice.

I say, if you want less issues and plan to keep it forever, go with the truck that has less gadgetry and less sensors.

If you plan on towing, the 4.0 has more usable torque at lower rpm's (regardless if what any duno numbers say) I've towed with both and the 3.5 has to rev more, which is fking annoying, especially on hills.
Both motors eat gas, because, well, it's a NA gas motor in a pickup truck. In the minivan, the 3.5 gets great gas mileage and feels powerful. Neither truck will be fast or powerful compared to a full size truck with a big v8.

I would not worry too much about a 3rd gen with 200K, specially if maintenance was done and no hard off-roading or towing (heavy weight hauling kills engines)

I’d suspect those are mostly highway miles.

Mine’s a 2016 with 140k. Still runs like new. Look into the maintenance records if possible. If original owner used any Toyota dealership for maintenance they should be able to provide entire service history.

Does OP think that we are going to snake one of these trucks from him if he posts more info?

Crazy high mileage for a 2016. About 28,000mi/year.

If my math is halfway decent, I'd say a guy drove about 60 miles to his job 5 days a week for about 7 years. Doesn't sound all too uncommon to me, an average peasant who drives into a big city for decent work.

Basically what I do. Couple that with a couple 1k mile trips a year and you hit 200k miles decently easy.

Considering about 14k miles per year is the national average in the U.S., it is indeed high. You outlier guys are not the rule, but the exception.

Canada is even lower at around 15k km, or about 10k miles.
