I had 001766 on order (was going to get delivered next week), but I canceled it since I found a dealer who offered $1800 less for the exact same truck ($500 above invoice). I don't mind waiting another month and a half (*custom order) to save a couple grand. Plus, that gives early adopters time to be the guinea pig after market parts and mods.

Because of the various factories and chassis codes and that they all have their own sequence, there can be multiple trucks with VIN's ending in "2708" for example. It's only unique to that chassis code at that factory.

Interesting, I didn't know that. I always assumed the last 6 digits were completely sequential across the board for each model year and each factory was assigned a block to build from.

It's not unique to the model year either, and in fact since the the 3rd gen isn't even really a new generation and is still using the same chassis codes for 2.7L models and they're at the same factories, the chassis numbers will likely continue counting up from the last 2015 sequence.

    (For example - numbers made up: TRN245-X067335 is a 2015 truck and TRN245-X067336 is a 2016 truck).

    Just Googled a 2016 Tacoma 2.7L VIN: 5TFRX5GN9GX051175.

    51175.

I know, that was exactly my point. The sequence is independent of model year and doesn't restart for every model year.

But for the 3.5L the vins seem to have reset, how do you explain a low sequence number years afterwards? Mines 1034

The 10th digit represents the model year.

I think that's a typo. The sequence usually resets every year. The 10th digit represents the year. The last 6 are the sequence for that year. The vin you found would imply Toyota has only made just over 50000 tacomas. I don't know the exact number but I'm sure toyota made way over 50000 gen 2 trucks.

    New engine means new chassis code. 1GR trucks were GRN225 - 265, 2GR trucks are GRN305 - 330.

The sequence does not restart every year, and like I said, starts at 0 for every chassis code for every plant. Toyota made way more than 50,000 Gen 2 trucks, and they restarted a few times for various reasons. That VIN is not a typo. It was the 51,175 TRN265 chassis made at the Texas plant. That's how Toyota VIN's work.

That's my whole point here, the last 6 digits are not indicative of which number Tacoma you have, and they don't reset with model years either.

I don't get it, they can't restart a sequence number, that would mean that you could have the possibility of having two vehicles with the same vin#???? Mind you they would have to be the same models, but it would leave the system open to duplicates. In any event I'm glad the sequence reset for the 3.5 so I know where my truck falls.

There's no possibility of duplicate VIN's, just duplucate sequence numbers. For the Gen 2/3, there are 14 chassis codes built at 3 different plants, which would typically be 42 sequences starting at 0, or approximately 42 million unique chassis codes without having to restart the sequence, which I'm sure they would do.

I'm not even sure why we're discussing the merits of the system here, lol. I'm just explaining how it works, why the 2016 Tacoma numbers didn't start at 0 for 2.7L models (because it's still the same chassis) and why there will be 8 2016 3.5L trucks built with the same last 6 digits.

Same last 6 digits, not same VIN. 2 for each chassis code (1 from each factory for each chassis code). The start of each VIN will be different.

Found Toyota's response pursuant to VIN Content Requirements: http://vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/mid/home/displayfile/29213
The document doesn't mention the 9th and 10th digits.
Re 9th digit: Mine (when I pick it up next week) is a number 8. I understand this is a check digit to verify authenticity of the VIN...a number obtained using a mathematical formula. Is that correct?
Re 10th digit: Mine is the letter G, which I understand is supposed to be the model year (2016). Well, I note that the letter G is the 7th letter of the alphabet which, intuitively would indicate model year 2017. Anyone know if this in fact is supposed to indicate the the model year, 2016, or is it indicating the the build year, 2017?
