    Sorry about the confusion. ...2017 can't be the build year, of course. But I'm wondering if the 10th digit (letter G) is supposed to indicate something else.

    As a complete guess, if it is model year A would be 2010. So G would be 2016 start from zero not 1.

    Thanks guys,

    Makes sense, the G in 10th position is for the year 2016.

    But, based on the new document Toyota issued to the DOT, http://vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/mid/home/displayfile/29213,
    the diagram above is no longer completely correct. Some of the VIN positions are the same, but several positions have changed from that diagram.

    For example, I am given to understand that the VIN for my new vehicle, 5TFHZ5BN8GX007116, indicates the following:

    Posn - Digit/Letter:
    1- 5 Country of origin (USA)
    2- T Manufacturer (Toyota)
    3- F Vehicle Type (Truck)
    4- H Body type and grade (double cab, limited grade, super-long wheel base, four wheel drive)
    5- Z Engine Type (2GR-FKS / Gasoline Port + Direct, V6, 3.5L)
    6- 5 Restraint devices and their locations:
    - Seat Belt: all seats
    - Frontal airbag: Driver and passenger seats
    - Curtain shield airbag: all rows
    - Side airbag: first row
    - Knee airbag: driver and passenger seats
    7- B Series: GRN310L
    8- N Line and Make: Toyota Tacoma
    9- 8 (same position) a check digit to verify authenticity of the VIN. A number obtained using a mathematical formula
    10- G Model Year (2016) (...or is that year built, i.e., 2017?)
    11- X Plant (Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas, Inc., San Antonio, TX, US)

    007116 production number. They are usually used to show literally the unit’s number as it went out the assembly line. So this means 00004 is the fourth car of the respective year model produced AT THAT PLANT.

    You are correct LeTacot, I missed that document. I will save it now. Thanks for the clarification.

    The 9th digit is a check digit calculated from all of the other digits, that is correct.

    10th digit is model year:
    A = 2010
    B = 2011
    C = 2012
    D = 2013
    E = 2014
    F = 2015
    G = 2016

    Hey, Jeff, do you have the vin breakdown with all these specifics for the 2017 4runners? I would really like to get that info too, I like this kind of stuff.
