Hey guys, read through the threads about the TSB update for the 3.5 guys and was wondering if there’s one for the 2.7 manual guys out there?

I’m hating this clunky shifting and my dealer says it’s “just the way it is” and that there’s “nothing to fix” because Toyota says it’s normal.

I’d like to bring in a PDF to them and make that run the update/ecu flash if there is one.

Unfortunately no TSB exists for the 2.7. Not yet atleast.

That’s what I figured. Sucks, but at least mine is CPO and covered just in case. So strange its much smoother not using the clutch coming out of first than it to use it lol. Makes no sense.

Is it also possible the trans oil could be low/need to be changed at 33k? I know there have been plenty of people saying from factory Toyota has been on the low side causing potential issues

What is your issue in detail. Hard shifts or clunking?

    I’d say both.

Biggest issue is shifting from 1st to 2nd - specifically 1st into neutral.. there’s a loud knock/clunk immediately after pulling out of 1st. If I don’t even use the clutch it’s significantly reduced which is confusing as hell.

The best way I can describe the sound is basically as if you reved up to say 3000-3500rpm shifted into second and instantly dumped the clutch hard (which I don’t do).

I rode along with the tech who said “1st is acting really weird.” Then they Called me at work saying “it’s fine” because Toyota says it is with no TSBs for it.

I think you maybe clutching too soon and/or pressing the clutch pedal too fast. I don't know if the 2.7 has rev hang or not. But I do know that my 3.5 will clunk if I clutch in 1st if the engine is still making power. I have to wait 1-2 seconds to let the engine stop revving and reduce power and let the torque in the drivetrain dissipate.

Next time, rev to 2500rpm, wait about 2 seconds and then press the clutch slow and smooth. Also, to make your shifts less grindy, try to get the shifter into the next gear quickly but smoothly without forcing the shifter into gear. You want to get the next gear before your engine RPMs drop too low, if you wait too long, the synchros will have to speed the transmission shafts back up to the correct speeds which is less smooth.

Also, think of it like this. When you clutch out of first and feel the harsh lurching. Imagine this: two guys playing tug of war, one guy is still pulling and the other guy lets go, therefore the one still making power goes flying backwards. But if both players relax and then let go of the rope, neither of them will fall backwards.

If you’re shifting without using the clutch you’re in for a rude awakening when you destroy the synchros and have to rebuild the transmission. Use the clutch; always. Trying to downshift into first while rolling to a stop will kill it, too but I guess that’s what keeps tranny shops in business so do what you want. Good luck.

I rarely do it brother - it was just me experimenting and noticing weird things. And it was just from 1st into neutral. Not into gear.

So I did something similar - only I didn’t wait a few seconds to clutch. I pressed the clutch slowly, and then technically did a “double clutch” - kept it in neutral for a split second before shifting into 2nd made all the difference in the world. I think maybe there was a little too much hang.

Not sure what’s going on internally but it’s helping being more mindful of 1st gear. After that it’s smooth sailing.

Double clutching is good. Use the clutch shifting into neutral, too. I hear it scratches the synchros if you don’t. In other words..... always use the clutch

Do you know if that holds true for when coming to a rolling stop and there’s zero resistance under 1000rpm? That’s usually the only time I haven’t used the clutch, and only periodically.

You could probably do it 1000x and get away with it but I’m not going there if I can help it

Well this 3rd gen is my baby and I expect to take her at least 250k+ before she takes a dump, so I’ll be cutting that habit out entirely if there’s a chance it’ll do damage long term.

Clutching is a pain in the ass sometimes but it just has to be done or it gets expensive. I know- 30 years ago I did all the shit you’re talking about and it worked for awhile until I found out the hard way and 2k later. Good luck with the little beastie!

The only reason it felt smoother without the clutch is because the stick will only float out of gear once the the engine stops sending torque through the drivetrain, but if you were to be engine braking, the stick will not come out of gear because now the torque is coming from wheels rolling with gravity and momentum.

I feel double clutching doesn't work as well on this transmission as it does on other transmissions. The clutch accumulator I feel delays the clutch engage/disengage too much for one to be able to make perfectly timed double clutch maneuvers. And what I mean by this is that, the clutch plate action will be slower than them your clutch pedal action.

The low trans fluid only applies to the auto. Your manual fluid is fine.
