    Howdy all,

I searched and found only one thread about this on a second gen tacoma. No response as to whether to recommended fix worked for the OP or not...

I found some other tid bits around google searching So i'll ask here so here it goes.

    As subject stated

Usually makes this metallic rattle tapping noise usually in drive at a stop in drive gear (automatic) when cold to warming up, usually won't do it when fully warm (20+ minutes).

Wife got out once in winter couple months ago while noise was present and heard it coming from above right wheel in the wheel well. I did as well on a later day.

Took to dealer, they went down the path of exhaust heat shield rattle and tech did find large rock on top of cat heat-shield when he banged on it it came flying out. They did charge me and warned they might if this was the case since it is a weather environment issue not a toyota fault issue. I kinda of expected this as reading from other threads. So i agreed to pay as long as tech showed me where so next time i can DIY etc.. He did they brought me out there and were very open about it and showed me where on the truck.

The whole day after i left dealer, no noise, so i was mostly a happy camper. Next day colder outside so the noise came back. Isolated it in a Walmart parking lot. Pushed on air box while noise was clearly present and as soon as i did noise went away both outside and back in the cab, could not be heard.

Read about some foam isolation from air box to fender, but have not found a step by step or any pictures to go off of. Just happy it was not an internal engine or transmission noise which i thought could be the case if not the heat-shields rattling.

Any help, links, or pictures, write-ups greatly appreciated!!

If i tackle this i will share my results granted may have to wait to next cold winter again.

    Thanks!
    Rick

BUMP, I looked a little more, now that the weather is warmer here in Nebraska the noise is likely gone until the Fall.

I looked, there is good foam seal where the air box goes into the fender, but maybe it needs some rubber seal or edge protector if it will fitter to insulate any vibrations. Will take it apart and try on a warm day when i have time, and post pics of what i did.
