Bought a 2017 TRD Sport in December and have the exact same issue from the rattle on the passenger side to the clunking and lurching forward and the engine breaking instead of coasting. Currently at 5,800 miles. Taken it in 3 times so far and tomorrow will be the 4th. The clunking happens randomly (independent of gas tank level) when the truck is hot or cold, and occurs in the front of the truck. Also, when I let off the gas hear an occasional click, and I have a ticking noise inside the dash with the wipers on the timed setting. Annoying.

Interested to see what/if anything people find out. If I'm told anything other than "we can't recreate the problem so we don't see any issues" Ill share. Definitely opening up a case tomorrow.

It's temperature dependent as it happens around the first notch during warmup and it's defeatable using ect + s mode, so it's the transmission.

I have the same issue. I've taken mine to the dealer so many times for it that I've decided to have my family friend's transmission shop manually check the fluid and give me their thoughts. Most transmission shops will do a free ride along and fluid inspection, even if it takes longer than doing the old dipstick check.

My dealer says they've manually checked the trans fluid, but people go see more than one doctor for second opinions, so why not do the same with the truck!

I'm in the exact same boat with no answers or fixes. My newest problem is when I take it through the car wash it takes on water. Just got it back today for that problem. They discovered that the leak was coming through the third break light. It just gets better and better

Bought mine yesterday (2017 TRD Sport). Noticed it on the drive to work today. Not horrible, but when decelerating it's like the AT downshifting is a bit harsh. And just before stopping there is a slight lurch/bump. Need to have them check fluid.

My previous Taco had a slight 'clunk' but it was a manual trans. It was the drive shaft.....greasing it helped

Just tested that this morning, and the ECT and S mode definitely prevented it. I've been keeping a note of when it happens to me for a few months now, and it's always at that first notch of engine temp.

Mine does it and its been checked for fluid level. This trans is junk. It shifts like shit most all the time. It does drive much better with the ECT button pushed.

I have it too really loud sometimes rep told me it was drive shaft end play when suspension flexed while coming to stop but I got under there it's a one piece drive shaft with no expansion sleeve so I call b/s on that someone else said the torque converter has lock/half lock and free modes and I may be hearing that engaging/ disengaging sounds like something that will cost money later to me.

My 2006 does it also.took it too the dealer and like always they said nothing wrong with it,took it too a driveline shop and they said sloppy gear matching in the the pinion gear.Toyota refuses too accept responsibility for their shitty manufacturing plain and simple. But now I have documentation that I took it in and they refused too fix it,so Toyota is on the hook if something breaks down,I have a warranty on the truck,I bought it used from the dealership.

Just wanted to update. Went for my 5k service yesterday. I mentioned the Diff howl at 50ish mph and the downshift clunk.

The downshift clunk is exactly that, it isn't axle wrap. I was told Toyota is expecting another transmission software update (at some point). It is a known issue "hard downshift at cold engine temp" is what he hold me. He said to mention it the next time i'm in and they'll see if the update is out.

I was told they took out a "new" tacoma and the diff howl was louder than mine, but they did hear it on mine. They say it's the truck's "personality".

Oh and I'm not on the recall list!!!!

This is absolutely correct. My 17 did this ....then I ended up with a check engine light and a TRAC ON light and took it to the dealer. They reflashed the software on the transmission and the problem has totally disappeared.

I would push any dealer who is telling you this is normal to have them clear your transmission codes and start fresh.

They need to grease the slip joint. I had the same problem and that was the fix.

This is the correct answer. Especially if your symptoms involve that slightly delayed thud.
