Mine does the same as above. And only if I brake a little fast. If I coast into it and go lightly on the brake it won't do it. Once warmed up I've never heard it.

I have a 2017, does the lurching-surging-clunks-- dealership says normal ( serious). My concern tho is at 2,900 mi., 6 months after bought, it has lost power taking off from stop signs right turns only, you are going maybe 14 to 17 mph taking off---foot goes to floor nothing. 3 appointments at dealership to have put on computer to check codes== it has read nothing--- so they say go , to another dealer- ( 3 hrs away---NO)--or more or less live with it. I have been watching forums--and few others have same thing going on, most left turns, but some right. Scary, unsafe, cannot duplicate---the master warning lite comes on when it does this. I called Texas to ask if they knew--get a NO---. All on Tacoma forums say is some have had low transmission fluid from factory---- I ask 3 times to have that checked--- now to find out one wait time of 3 hr 25 min so they could supposedly ck second time--- they have not done so any 3 times!! Am not sure why a dealership just takes money and you are to go away. ( negative remarks I do not want to hear) facts. I am used to clunks, lots of shifting ( auto), air blowing in thru windshield--- but to go in a limp mode dislike allot. They made me a case #--- does not help me. Hoping someone on here has answer soon. I agree 100% the attitude of dealership sucks big time!

my 17 does this as well -- seems like the quicker I come to a stop, the harder the slam is. The area rep from Toyota is coming to my dealer to check this out on Wed of this next week. I told the dealer " you may want to press Toyota if you don't want to have me in your dealership bitching about it for the next 2 1/2 years as I am retired (I have plenty of spare time) and won't let it go till something is done -- also my other gripe is the idle surging 100-200 RPM while warming up. All else is fine

Guaranteed Toyota is going to tell you it's a normal operating characteristic and/or it's not easily duplicated so they cant help you.

Regardless of whether or not it's an issue, that's what you're going to hear.

So far my dealer has been very responsive and "tried" to fix the problems.

At least the paperwork will be on file...next will be to open a case and try to get extended warranty.

I'm still frustrated that I'm getting the vibration when slowing down too

Anyone with the clunking problem should call Toyota and open up a case. If they don't fix it demand an extended warranty. They know there is an issue per the guys I've talked to...

I've been to the dealer almost 10 times trying to get it resolved. My service manager knows the issue, and I've documented it every time I have been in. When you call the number they ask you who your service manager is so I would assume you might need to bring it in at least once to establish that??? Not sure though. I would call and see what they say. I am currently waiting to hear back from a factory rep who they will schedule with me after the new year...

I had the "loss of power" on right turns, if I was already moving and cranked her hard right.....!! This was in my 2006.... I thought the tranny fluid not getting to the pick-up might be the issue.... It was about 2 liters low. Once I filled her, It never happened again....!! Seemed to be MY issue...... Checked my 2016 and it was low by 1.5 Liters....

Toyota is saving WS fluid I guess...???

wow=10 times--- my 3d trip and they are not even looking at me==told me never heard of it, and if does it again go to different dealership== which is 1 1/2 hrs or 2 1/2 hrs away 1 way-- I do not go out of town. That far. I bought yet again local because of warranty-- does no good.
How are you in contact with a factory rep? That's who I wanted to discuss issue with, but calling Texas several times, I get a lady who says not heard of it. I ask for a rep somewhere in states, so I could ask his opinion, and she says take different dealership!! Serious--- that's a NO. The dealership here in Oregon apparently do not know how to check auto trans fluid---they made me wait 1 time 3 hrs 25 min., only to find out they never checked it--I was told it was ok. I offered 2 times to pay. Made appointment 2 weeks ago my mechanic=== it was 1/2 qt low. Please do let us know on here if you get a answer or a fix. And how to reach a factory rep--would be great. ( Mine has thrown no codes 3 times.

This is the number I called. I was given this number by my service manager at the dealership I've been going to.

UPDATE: So I called my case manager and he finally got back to me and told me: The factory rep says the clunking transmission is normal. Most people do not like how this truck shifts so I should drive it in "S" mode. My reply was along the lines of; If I wanted a manual I would have purchased a manual (insert passive aggressive tone and swear words)

My transmission doesn't just quietly clunk when it down shifts. Majority of the time I can feel the clunk in the cab and sometimes it feels like I just hit a pothole. This is not "normal" IMO. I'm waiting for another call back bc this last weekend the truck had the loss of power mentioned above and almost shut off when I was taking a turn. I am so lucky!

Sounds like another low tranny....!! When you turn hard, the fluid shifts and the "pick-up" sucks air..?? This happened in my 2006...filled tranny and it never did it again.
