Yeah, read that title correctly you did.

2017 purchased July that year from dealer w/ 5k miles (it was a loaner truck).

51k miles in, while going a lazy 70mph on the 5 south, it overheated. Coasted to the shoulder and let it sit for about an hour before I could get coolant into it. Started it up, drove about a mile, and every dash light came on and the engine cut out.

Fast forward 200 miles of towing, the dealer I bought it from held on to it for a week before some regional tech could inspect it before engine tear down. They surmised a blown head gasket, but needed to explore the cause to determine if covered under warranty or not. It’s been two weeks now, and they found “a crack in the block” as they’ve told me.

Still haven’t been told the words “It is covered under warranty, you owe $0.” so I’m still holding my breath. They said any modifications, even adding LED headlights, could void a warranty.

I called BS on that right away, but I do have LEDs and some other electrical mods. No engine mods whatsoever though, and no towing or hard driving. Truck hasn’t been off-road in 6 months so I think I would’ve known it if happened on my last road trip.

I’m on the hook for the engine tear down, any repairs, plus the cost of the loaner truck if they deem not covered under warranty.

Any other 3rd gens have issues with blown head gaskets and/or block failure? Or any major warranty battles ending in a win?

That sucks. Good luck, hope it's covered under warranty. After the BS about the mods I would have nailed them to the wall.

Well firstly it should be under the 60k powertrain

Second good luck explaining how an led light cracked your block

Third don't let them intimidate you it's under the 60k warranty.

You have to remember we only hear one side of the story here. If it is warranty they will cover it. If he did something stupid, they won't. And there are some stupid pople out there.

If you think it’s not possible to crack the block on a 4cyl engine you have another thing coming

    Jesus, here we go...

    1. I didn’t say that.

    2. Yes, it’s possible (if you trash it)

    3. I bet a years salary your 3.5s block will crack before my 2.7s between design and my driving habits.

That’s my only point. 3.5 is a good motor, IMO 2.7 is just more time proven

Yep, until I see the print out with goose eggs, it’s not a for sure thing.

They tried just having me spring to fix the blown HG, but I knew there would be more going on. Just a matter of waiting them out right now

Yeah, not one of those stupid people. Again, not trusting Toyota until I see the print out with zeros on it

2TR-FE 2.7L is mostly a crossover/minivan/SUV motor. Totally does not belong in a truck.

Was it giving low on coolant indication or was it a sudden eruption of coolant? Was the coolant consumed? Were you towing when this happened? Does your truck have a history of coolant consumption? Recorded record of consumption from the dealer at each service?

Not going to lie, most Tacomas I see on I5 are either going 80mph+ in the left lane driving like a jerk or in tow on their way to Mexico stacked three high or long. that's just who I remember I guess:notsure:
    Also in before :locked:

I keep seeing this comment about these engines not being a truck engine! Last time I remember a true truck engine was the Seventies and early Eighties. Now I was young then but in my twenties these vehicles were the cheap ones I could afford. Manufacturers haven't used a true truck specific engine in years. It doesn't make sense to have one specifically for trucks and not cars. The old 4 bolt main Chevy 350 and 400 blocks and the 351M and 400M blocks of Ford come to mind for truck specific engines. I find the comment that the 3.5L engine is a car engine funny! It's an engine. It isn't a car or a truck engine. It doesn't make a difference.

My sarcasm may be lost. I was attempting to illustrate the basic, fundamental ridiculousness of labelling things “truck motors” etc. If it’s in a truck, it’s a truck motor. Full stop.

LMFAO. all I was trying to say was I trust my 2.7 more mile after mile.

Let’s put it this way - I’ll bet a YEARS SALARY my 2.7 makes it longer than anyone’s 3rd gen 3.5.

Anyone up for the challenge? 50k on the clock right now. 25k from previous owner and who knows how he drove it so ya MAY have a head start lol.

Edit: love how my privileges for this thread are gone. @SeanSkiVT my 2.7 will outlast your 3.5 so YOU “ gtfo out of here with that shit.”
