No update still, last I hear was waiting for the heads to come back after being tested to see if they can be reused. Just over 3 weeks without the truck now

Do you know if they sent them to a machine ship or back to Toyota? Any machine shop worth their salt should be able to give that answer in a few hours.

Something you all are forgetting when bickering about HP numbers is that output numbers are relative. Cam specifications, gearing (both trans and axle), desired usable torque range......many things come into play when an engine builder or OEM is deciding how much power an engine should crank out. A proper camshaft spec for "truck" gearing and usage is going to put a higher torque amount in the low-mid range of the engine to carry that 5500+lbs vehicle and make it do the things truck people are looking for. The 318hp Lexus car version is moving a much lighter vehicle around in an entirely different manner and I would imagine the two on the same dyno on the same day would have drastically different curves.

Im putting a 335hp 5.3L LS v8 in my Camaro that originally had a 325hp 5.7L LS. Unless I make some changes to the cam, intake, and tuning....that 10+hp engine in my 3200lbs car is going to perform wayyyyyy worse than the original larger lower hp engine did.

They've only agreed to pay for a 1/3 of the job. Jury is still out on the rest.

I was asking the OP to confirm, because it’s either covered by warranty or it’s not. The numbers are close so it seems more like a typo.

    This is what I sent...

OP you got people confused. I’m assuming you forgot the 1 to make it $13,899.00? Some think you’re only getting 1/3 covered.

Dependent on how the repair order is written, they can approve the job in pieces. It sounds like Toyota has agreed to cover the block regardless of anything else and they are waiting on a machine shop to tell them if the heads are reusable or if new heads will be needed then Toyota will need to approve replacements.

Max, I have the I4 and I'm fine with the 2.7. I can't imagine needing the v6 in this as it would only be needed for Heavy Towing or perhaps a heavy mini camper. Even that's ONLY "sometimes". All those extra parts and money so you can say "I've got a V6" just does not impress me ...

With that said. In reply to what Shane stated ... ( who pays and what's covered ). It's all about the $'s. In My opinion Toyota eventually pays for this ... But the game is who blinks first. How can Toyota get out of this the cheapest ... The Owner gives up ? He? Gives in? He Pays some ?? He trades ??? It's a waiting game. Whoever waits' the longest wins ... JMO.

OP Best of Luck !!! hang in there !! Be sure every time you go in bring a notebook and make notes - makes them nervous - And ask them to spell their names ...

Nope, I typed what I typed. I’m putting the updates in as they come, and they said just the block was covered and that was the approx. cost of a block.

They didn’t specify which shop the heads were sent to. I’ve had four different techs now, they keep passing the notes and like a game of telephone I’m only getting pieces here and there.

I was told today that there’s a possibility it could all be put back together tomorrow, but when I asked what the final cause, damage, and damage to my wallet was, I was told I’d get a call back.

    I didn’t get a call back -_-

This is not the exact truth, the full factory warranty still applies. If you have 2 years/xxxxx miles left on warranty, you still have that left. If your warranty is almost up then yes the 1 year on repairs warranty is all you have.

The quality of work/knowledge/integrity of the service provider is critical.

Right, I understand that. I also posted that I have 51k miles, and I will for sure hit the 60k limit within the next few months after getting the truck back. So the year warranty on whatever work is performed is what I’ll get. I knew all that in my head but didn’t clearly explain it

I understand Toyota is stringing you along and until they make a decision you're in limbo. It might be better in the long run if the heads are damaged, you might get a complete factory engine.

They have to authorize all out of pocket repairs with you before they complete them. If they try to charge you for something you didnt previously agree to, tell them where to stick it.

    Final Update: it’s covered.

Breathed a sigh of relief when they called me yesterday. $0 from me.

The notes I got back say this, and verbatim this so don’t snipe me on their typos:
“Cause: MIL LIGHT ON/DISSAMBLED FOUND #5 BORE CRACKED DUE TO POOR MATERIAL OR CASTIN”

“Correction: R&R SHORT BLOCK Z-TIME FOR PREPARATION OF CYLINDER HEADS”

I have the list of part numbers that were replaced, might add that later if anyone is interested. Hopefully this thread never gets looked at again, this whole thing really sucked

    Work in progress...
4.0, manual transmission, super charger etc. I am thinking, if they informed me wouldn't have been covered. Be the first guy on the block to retro fit a 4.0 into the 3rd gen; is there a thread on that?
