By the time they make a North American Diesel compliant with the Emission Standards it won't be getting that kind of mileage no more...

Depends, if they offered on the base model you could get into around $30K. The stripped down B-Max package with 4WD is $25K. There was a rumor awhile back that the Tacoma and the HiLux were going to share the same platform, which would of been nice to get that 2000# payload of the HiLux. Some of us still use them as trucks...I am wanting to get a popup camper to toss one on a Tacoma, I am over payload real quick by the time you load it up with supplies. To get that 2000# payload, means I have to buy a Tundra regular cab. Not a bad truck, however you'll be lucky to get 15mpg, which msrp is around $32K.

So if you get a Tacoma oil burner on a HiLux chassis for the same price as that Tundy, now your mpg is the 20's...then it kinda makes sense...of course you're living in a dream world filled with cupcakes and rainbows.

Some guy did build that dream rig..spent no where near $30K on the truck...that diesel swap alone is $25K. No idea how they are under payload though, sure you can put stiffer springs or air bags on it, does nothing for frame strength.

    That's a sweet rig. I do know that 4x4 80's 22RE FI 4 and 5 speed fiberglass RVs were made. My dad has a 85 Mirage 22RE 4-speed but its a 2wd.....weak.

I wish Toyota still made a heavy duty version of the small trucks. They should of stayed quirky and not got into the fullsize market as they did with the Tundra.

Have capacity with decent mileage would be nice. Not everyone needs 800 ft/lbs of torque. Seems like full size 1 ton diesels are aimed at the small penis crowd...

Chassis cab Toyotas with duallys were factory made since the 70's I believe. But they never came with a bed or anything from Japan, that was added here as aftermarket. They had dual rear wheels, bigger leaf spring pack, and reinforced rear axle and longer frames. In about ~86 they came from factory with the HD front end with the special 6 lug front wheels, bigger front suspension and brakes. Before that even the dually chassis cabs had the standard 5 lug suspension.

Here's my dad's beastly Mirage. 1985 with 6 lug dually rear and 5 lug standard front end. All it needs is a diesel 5-speed, 4x4 and its ready to roll!

I hope the Cummins Titan is a success. It is stupid that the only way to get a 300,000+ mi engine (Cummins) is in 50,000- mi trucks (Dodge).

i drive a power wagon now and i'm selling it for a 2015 limited ram 3500 with the cummins and the aisin trans its a 71k truck. i'm doing the full aev kit to it plus a whole bunch. if i thought they where junk i never would have made the decision to buy one.

my power wagon has been awesome unstoppable to be honest i like ram trucks and with that big cummins and now the aisin trans which is proven whats not to like about it? btw i'd buy a diesel tacoma but i doubt they will ever make one at least in the next couple of model years.

on a side note how you been blind fury lol

I understand that Tacoma world members represent a very small % of overall Tacoma owners, I never said otherwise. If you look at quote, I was responding to and answering the question of how many Tacoma World members would pay extra for a diesel. With that I still stand by response and say a lot of Tacoma World members would be willing to pay a premium for a diesel engine.

A much better question would be will this thread come up every year from now on until Toyota either pulls out of the truck market or builds a Diesel? How much time will be wasted asking if the 2028 4th generation Tacoma will finally come with a Diesel for the 5-10% of owners who might actually buy one?

No Diesel for the Toyota folks. GM is going to sell the baby Duramax on only certain models, like they do with the Cruize Diesel, and the price will be at least $5K more from what I've been told by the local dealer.

Oh, and baby 1 tons are a terrible idea. I run 1500-2000 lbs loads all the time in my truck as a good sized agricultural retailer. Even half ton trucks aren't that stable at that weight with a wider stance. You'd need to put 3/4 ton suspension on that little truck to get it to hold load and even my heavy 3/4 ton rides like shit without load. Imagine if you put that heavy suspension and frame on a smaller truck like the Tacoma. You'd have hundreds of complaints about the ride scaring people off for the one hardcore camper who would love that package.

Willing to bet they won't offer the oil burner in the work truck, only the higher packages...at that price point might as well buy a 1/2 Ton.

Yeah, people like me are in the very low minority. We want the HiLux that is offered over seas. However Toyota US's target market is for mall crawlers mostly....how Toyota specs the Taco proves that point loudly.

Always want what you can't have. ;)

Some say the Dodge chassis is a shipping crate for the Cummins... :D

I wouldn't even say mall crawlers. That's an insult to mall crawlers considering at least 50% of all trucks sold in NA are commuter vehicles. It's easier to appease that group with a nicer driving truck. That being said the American big 3 have been doing a great job turning there half tons into swiss army knives that drive well and do fine with huge loads.

Yep, to end up in a Superduty lol.

    I consider commuters...mall crawlers...grocery getters...what have you...all the same to me ;)

The Big 3 are doing great...hard not to look at the F150. Ford does offer a pretty good stripped down model, comes really close to the "needs".

Though I would like a little smaller package, and a manual trans.

So why does the Toyota hilux(EU and AU) Tacoma diesel get such good gas mileage. Calculated it out and in city it gets 25 and highway it gets 35mpg. With a 2.8 turbo diesel.

No crazy strict emissions standards means they can let the engine run open. In the US, we have to add filters and recirculate already burned air back into the engine. All this robs power

1HZ is about the only Toyota diesel I would buy. Everything new is crap. 5.9 cummins and 7.3 powerstrokes have huge followings while the newer stuff is nothing but trouble. The best of the lot of the modern diesels -- the 2.0 VW TDI w/o urea -- turned out to be tuned to not meet emissions standards.
