    Hi guys ,
I bought a tacoma TR 2 a few months ago i notice a noise coming from the engine i thought it was a valve tapping noise but the service department said people are are complaining about it, that it is a emissions pump that toyota is aware of the noise issue and are coming out with a quieter pump .has anyone aware of this

    Thanks

I've noticed what I would describe as a "clanking" or "rattling" noise. It seems to happen after accelerating while feathering the throttle. It appears to be impacted by engine RPM rather than speed though. Also while I most commonly hear it around 1800 rpm but that isn't always the case. Is this what you've experienced?

I have the same issue. Yes it almost does resemble a piston knock. On cold mornings it is louder, once the engine warms up it quiets down a little but still remains quite noticeable.
Mine is right around the 1500 to 2000 rev mark. I want to be positive and thing that it's our injectors but I've never heard injectors this LOUD and I work as a bodyman for a large body shop. I run up to 5 cars through the shop every day (90% of them are cold start when I drive them in) all makes and models, including the lexus that shares our same motor and I can honestly say that not one makes the Tack Tack Tick Tick Clank Clank our truck engines make and it's driving me up the wall!!
So much so that I almost just want to sell it and go back to my 2001!!
Dealer says "it's normal", "it's the injectors cleaning themselves" , it's the high pressure gas pump...." it's, it's it's.....
It's LOUD AS HECK, is what it is!!
Other members say "just turn up the radio"
But when you just gave a hefty down payment and when your still going to be making payments long after the warranty runs out on something that sounds like it's going to break down, it's quite aggravating to say the least.

What I would like to do is start a thread for 16 17 and 18 taco owners who are having this engine noise issue so we can document facts about it from a serious somewhat scientific approach. If we are consistent in our findings then maybe Toyota will take us more seriously than "it's normal..... (thum twiddle, eye roll)"
I for one plan on doing a in depth documentation and analysis of my issue and concerns. The thread I plan on opening is for those who would like to do the same. Not for those who don't even own a 16 17 or 18 and just want to say "turn up the radio" or something along those lines.
I want answers from Toyota, serious ones. And we won't get them if we don't seriously document FACTS about what we are experiencing with our trucks.
I see a lot of "Help me" threads regarding this issue that are just full of assuming comments or disregarding and sometimes disrespectful comments.
If you really want "help" then help me document and seriously investigate and compare our findings.
I will be starting this thread soon.
    Thank you.

Dropped mine at the dealer 12/15/17 for this issue. Just got it back today 4/4/18. After dropping it off, dealer contacted toyo and they opened a ticket on it. They then issued a TSB (tsb 0316-17) on it to replace the vac pump. The vac pump was being re-engineered and to be released to the public on 3/4/18. Guess what? Same issue, and i personally think its louder. Dealer said that toyo said its the nature of the engine. I then asked if it was the nature of this engine, then why did toyo go through the trouble of the guess work and try to re-engineer the part? Obviously they know there is an issue. Dealer had no answer for me but to call toyo customer care number. Good luck gentlemen, im still not giving up. Going to make the call and voice my complaint.

Thanks, but I very much doubt it will happen. After all, its the nature of the engine lol

I have the same "knocking noise". I had my truck looked at in January and the dealer says he is waiting on the part. I look online and see the part (new number) is available. I did get a copy of the TSB #0316-17 from the dealer, dated Nov. 20,2017.
Just would like to know if anyone has any success with this issue.

What does this part do? The dealer says that it is involved with emissions, but the TSB refers to the repair as "Brake system(other): Vacuum Pump"

I contacted Toyota through their main webpage. I actually got a call back! The first call was to gather facts about the issue, then the next day someone called back with an answer. Toyota will not have the replacement part available until late April/ early May. They are supposed to call me again when the part is available. Apparently the part one of you got in March was not the new one.

I contacted toyo, and got a case number etc. my noise is coming from the right side in the general area of this vacuum pump. Put a stethoscope on the pump, it has a steady noise but not ticking. Moved over to the valve cover and i hear the ticking. Not sure whats driving this pump yet, but sure sounds like the valves need to be shimmed/adjusted. Will see what happens and keep you informed.

Finally got the "newly redesigned" part. They put it in a week ago. When you first start up, the noise is muffled. After about 30 minutes of driving the noise can be heard if you stop. If you put the truck in park, it gets even louder than before. So much for waiting six months.

I have had my truck since March 13 and the clanking has become worse. The truck is beginning to sound like a diesel there is no better way to describe it. I have not taken it in, I did check the oil because it has become so loud that even my wife looks at me and says "your truck is clanking". It is loud at start up and on acceleration but I have not paid attention to rpm range yet. Truck only has 1600 miles on it. I will take it in next week and see if I get other then dealer double talk and post the info.

    All,
Have been at this for over a year now. Got a 2017 Sport. Originally there was only the injectors. After a few thousand miles, it started. Ballpeen hammer against the block / diesel noise. I'm on my 4th open ticket for the same issue. Met with two dealers and the regional service rep twice. Yup you guessed it "it's normal". The last time they pulled up a 2018 next to mine , both running, the 18 was actually louder and had 20 miles on it. I'm now waiting for the toyota Corp customers service manager to "check in" with the service rep. He claims that he needs to talk to him first before anything else. Not sure what that means. I basically told them that if it's normal, and can't / won't be fixed, I want a no charge, transferable extended warranty if they will stand by their answer. Additionally, I don't want a "normal" reaponse, I want the exact reason why the noise exists and why toyota built it this way.
