So I'm getting the feeling that the Atkinson engine may be the source of the problem here for all of us which would make this problem really difficult to resolve.
Did this noise start in 2016 with the engine change? Is the 2016 1.5 engine the same as the 2018 1.5 engine?

They tell you that the injectors are cleaning themselves. But to clean a injector it needs to cycle. So this BS . You can't be cycling injectors to clean . Thats dumping fuel. They can't dump fuel. What you are hearing is spark knock and piston knocking in cylinders. Use high test and see knock diminished. Drive on high with ect on high rpms are cleaning piston and valves. This will help. But not for long.

Just chiming in since I found the thread that has the same issue I'm having. Been at the dealership twice about it and they couldnt duplicate. I found this TSB and now all of a sudden they want to fix it without duplicating it. From what I'm reading here however, it's not going to fix it. But it's a worth a shot I guess...

I think I have this engine ticking noise with my 2018 SR5, is anyone else experiencing noises with the 2018 year model Tacoma’s? Are there any TSBs to fix the issue? I’ve only been able to find one for the vacuum pump causing a knocking sound for the 2016 and 2017 Tacoma’s.

I’m watching this tread for at least 6 months. 2017 Taco Sport Long Bed. Took the car twice to dealer and they can’t replicate the noise.
It’s that clanking thing around 1800 rpm.
    Could it be the driveshaft?
I’m really disappointed. Got a brand new car to avoid headaches. Cannot duplicate the noise nor record it.
Your description fit my issue perfectly .

New to TW. I’ve got the knock problem. 1800-2000 rpm. Accelerating under load. 50-60mph When accelerator is released there is knock or lifter tick Or flutter. It does not sound good. It’s at the dealership as I type. I’ll keep y’all updated. No to optimistic though. Dealership seemed as if they were trying to get out of it. Fingers crossed

New to TW as well. I’m from Australia and traded my 2017 diesel 4x4 dual cab SR Hilux on a 2018 Hilux Workmate 2.7 at the end of August. The salesman delivered the car to me so I didn’t drive it before signing up. Big mistake.
Within 500 metres, I noticed the noise. It’s a bit like a diesel rattle or loose conrod bearings. Took the car back to the dealer after the weekend and they tried to track down and rectify the problem. At one stage they said they wouldn’t release the truck back to me because of the issue. Then they called to say it would be okay to drive and that a Toyota service rep would look at it in two weeks.
The Toyota rep came and we drove around for three hours with an NVH kit hooked up. He said to give him 2 weeks to research the problem and finally got back to me with, in part...
“In summing up the situation it can be said that the condition described by you is a characteristic of the 2018 Hi Lux 2TR 4-cylinder Petrol engine with Automatic Transmission, when the vehicles engine is operating at approximately 3000rpm and has no effect on the vehicles performance or durability.”
No mention of what was causing the noise so I’m at a loss to understand how they can say it has no effect on reliability.
There are very likely differences in the US and Aussie versions of the 2.7 but it seems they share the same rattle issue.
I’ve asked for my old vehicle back but don’t like my chances of that happening.
Toyota seems to be following all the other auto makers in producing underdone products and blowing customers off when they complain.
I’m taking the truck back to the dealer for another attempt to track down the noise by running the engine with the drive belt removed. Will post the results.

Just back from the dealer. We dropped the drive belt and the noise is still there. So, no easy fix. Seems like all the current 2.7s rattle. I even contacted a dealer with a 2017 demo with 3500 km to see if it rattled. He called back, quite surprised, and said, yes it did but it was the first time he’d noticed it. An explanation why we don’t hear of it much in Aus is that the 2.7s are only fitted to the base Hilux utes (Workmate) and Hiace vans. These are usually sold to fleets and the like, not so much to private owners like me. No matter, a rattle is a rattle and needs to be addressed. At least Toyota oughta tell me why it does what it does or give me 15000 km extended warranty and road service.

I have a 2017 2.7 base model with the auto trans 7500 miles its as quiet as a engine could be! I could make you a video to give to your dealer!! actually I have never reved it to 3k rpm while under the hood! but hear nothing while driving.

Thanks Robert. Good to hear it’s possible to get one that doesn’t rattle, should make my claim against the dealer and Toyota a lot stronger.

In not sure why people expect this engine to sound like other engines. Direct injected gas engine “tick”, which is why they all have that insulated plastic guard over top to keep the ticking sound down. This particular engine is both direct and port injection and runs either fueling method at different times so the overall sound will change. It also has variable valve timing that will switch the cycle between simulated-Atkinson and true Otto cycled depending on the situation.

I expect such a weird engine design to sound weird, and it does. Myself I kinda like the dieselish ticking at times.

The second gens have this noise worse then the third do, and the first gens were god awful loud. Both those vehicle are considered extremely reliable.

I have spent considerable amount of time with just about every generation Tacoma and every day I see these posts about "I should have kept my xgen". It gets old, I'm going to start recording some videos of the older generations engines to show people just how good we have it with these 3rd gens

I’m talking about the 2TR FE 2.7 litre 4 cylinder. As far as I know it’s a normal port injected engine with dual VVT.
I’ve emailed the Toyota service rep to explain the source and reason for the noise.

Funny you say that. I just had a guy at the gas station ask if I did a diesel swap. I didn't feel like trying to explain the issue, so in the interest in saving time I just said "yep" and left

I just experienced the same thing with my 2017 Tacoma TRD Off Road. I brought it to the dealer and they said it was the Camshaft Gear Actuator. They're fixing it right now. It's still under warranty.

So I have experienced this issue a LOT in the past few weeks. I decided to try out running higher octane gas and it seems to help the issue. I have a 17 trd off-road with 112k miles on it. I went with 93. After this tank I'm going to get half a tank of regular see if it comes back and then get mid-grade to see if that changes anything at all (gas with 10% ethenol is being used). If this does affect the tick/noise at 1800-2200 rpm I am not entirely sure what to do with my findings.

So I just picked up a slightly used 2019 v6 Off Rd. My engines sounds like a diesel after it warms up and Its idling . Told it is "Normal". Luckily I bought it with a certified Used with a 100,000 mile drive train warranty.

While i got only a little over 4k miles on my 2020 3.5 i can't hear any odd noises coming from the engine except the fan. Actually it runs pretty quiet very similar to my brothers old 3.0 v6 highlander. My 4.7 tundra use to sound like it had large loose ball bearings in a full 55 gal drum till it warmed up...did it from day 1

Mine does the same thing, but not always. I never even noticed it until yesterday when someone pointed it out. It doesn't bother me enough to worry about it, but I'll mention it when I bring it in for it's next oil change. I'm only at 16K miles, there is plenty of warranty left.

It's definitely coming from the right side, because if I stand on the left side I can't hear a thing.

My friend said maybe it's a bad lifter, but I don't think so.
