I've owned my 2016 SR5 V6 for about a year now. The truck only has 20K miles. This is probably the most frustrating engine/transmission ever built. The engine sounds like a cackling diesel, and is very slow/no torque unless you wind it out, which is obnoxious (scolded cat). Don't get me started on the transmission (I did get the ECU update). The truck has VERY loud and constant valve chatter/knocking while under 1/4 throttle uphill. It sounds like they have water instead of oil in the engine. I own a 2010 Rav4 V6 3.5L (best sleeper car ever). The V6 in the rav4 has over 100K, and is completely SILENT, and runs like a sewing machine. It has TONS of power, incredible response, and is incredibly reliable. How a 2016 Toyota can have a loud, horribly shifting, knocking engine at 20K miles is unacceptable. I know it's a truck, and I use it to haul items, but seriously, it's a major disappointment in an era where we've had much more refined powertrains for decades now. Now my truck exibits a humiliating, rather deafening "chirping" at idle, like an oversized 100 pound freak cricket in the engine. It reflects off of buildings when I'm at traffic lights.

Oh - and then there is the 50mph rear whine, wind noise like a window is open, water coming in through the door seals, and weird kazoo sound with cross winds.

The good news is, I bought the truck for $27k, put 10K miles on it, and now it's somehow worth $31K. By these standards, it was still a solid choice.

Drove to Linville NC from Charlotte NC (longest drive so far in my truck - 150 miles / 4 hours round-trip), about 30 minutes into the drive, my engine started to whine loudly (sounded like a supercharger lol) every time I accelerated. Being in the mountains made it even worse because it was constant acceleration and deceleration because of the steep hills. I heard it could be related to the fuel pump recall, or even a power steering issue. Should I be worried about it?

I also hit 10,000 miles while on that trip lol

I bought my Taco 1 month ago. I realized about that 'clunck' while adjusting my lights.
Also when cold, it does that.
From the dealer they told me the same story that everybody wrote already.

    same here..
got my Cert'd 17 in July, got the whole warranty etc.. was told at 4 dealerships it was normal Toyota V6 Injectors..

It's quiet at a cold start..but after 5min of driving, it sounds like a Hino box van.

    bugs me. big time.

I also saw a thread regarding cam lobe ware and valve issues..so I'm paranoid it's something more than injectors.
then again..it's under warranty and I'll keep the maint items with the dealer so they can hear it too.. lol

After reading back through, there's a TSB on it? I'm digging deeper now..

I've got a 2020 sr5 v6 auto with little over 4k miles. As far as engine noise...it a little noisier than my 3.0 v6 i had back in 93, but i would never rate it up there with a diesel, not even close. The auto in this 2020 operates near perfect. Really can't find anything currently to complain about. Even the cab is quiet as far as wind noise, you'll only hear the engine rev, and some tire noise.
As far as the rave4, my brother has their hybrid rave4. All i can say its an awesome vehicle.

Am I reading there are two issues? One sounds like a constant tick or diesel sound. The others some describe as a noise/rattle when they get to an certain rpm?
Mine is like the last, I can't always reproduce it. It seems to happen when I putting along maybe 3rd gear then I give it some gas and before it shifts there is a rattle or knocking. It's short maybe 1/2 a second and not loud. Yesterday was the first time out of maybe 10 times (in two months) I thought it was from the engine. Thoughts?
    Thanks!

Mine is a 2017 trd OR and it idles different from my buddy’s 2018 OR. His has less than half the miles but I’m not sure what would cause the difference. Of course it makes the whine/whistle when I let off the gas on the highway. Not sure what would cause this.

"Your" thread is nothing more than amature speculation backed up by anecdote with vague similarity.

Pretty much what other people have said. The ticking when running is related to the engine self cleaning or something. I'm so used to it that I had to go back and see what my original comment was.

My Tacoma sounds like it has "valve clatter." It has had this pretty much since new. It is almost always related to, and most pronounced, when it tries to do a downshift. Because this POS transmission is always "lugging" in the tallest gear possible, it happens all the time. So driving along in 5th or 6th gear, and you suddenly hit an incline, try to maintain speed, so it downshifts and that's when the "clattering" or "ticking" occurs. It is NOT constant for me. I have 35k miles on my truck.

Should I have the dealer look at it? I'm almost out of warranty, as I'll have had it 5 years this spring. If this is just "injector noise" then I can live with it. If it's a sign of an unhealthy engine, I want to bring it up.
