Greetings, hoping for some help with my TRD Sport push button start. A couple months ago my truck stalled backing up a steep hill. Ever since then it's been having a really hard time starting, pretty much only when warm after sitting for a bit. There's no check engine light and my mechanic couldn't find any hard faults or any major clues stored on the computer. I'm thinking crankshaft position sensor, fuel pump, or fuel injector leaking. There's no active recall on my vin number.

The 2016 and 207 did have bad cam position sensors.

What about your last tank of gasoline?

does a Tacoma have a fuel rail pressure sensor..just wondering
if a Honda DI has low pressure it will immediately set the check engine light

The OP's video shows long excessive stumbling cranking that is not normal.

Find a new mechanic who actually knows what they're doing and who has a skillset deeper than pulling codes.

Try going to a different mechanic, one that that will dig deeper into the issue. Not just look at the codes.

Edit: Im now thinking that it is the pressure in the fuel lines are low. Just a thought though.

It's been several tanks of different name brands and grades so I'm doubting that as an option.

That is a good suggestion, I should try to find one that does advanced diagnostics.

Low pressure makes sense for long cranking, but it only happens when warm after sitting for around an hour to about 4 hours or so. I was thinking that an injector could be releasing gas into a cylinder making it too rich, unless I wait long enough for that extra fuel to evaporate then would start fresh with all cylinders empty of unexpected gas.

Stalled backing up a steep hill and a no start issue could be just coincidental.
I'd find a good factory trained TOYOTA tech that knows how to use an oscilloscope. Could be as simple as an mass sensor if you're feeling lucky.

I think some 2017s got on a low pressure fuel pump recall. Mine is October build date made the list.

Definitely could be a coincidence, could also be two separate issues. I wish it were easier to find a good tech, I'd like to avoid taking to several places and paying several diagnostic fees if possible. The other issue with taking it to someone is that the problem is not necessarily replicable... I'm starting to think I should just buy a new crankshaft position sensor and see if that has any effect. I know my year narrowly misses the recall, but it's pretty close and it's the cheapest place to start

In finding a good tech, the first rule is experience, experience.

The more experience the merrier, 10 yrs with TOYOTA minimum, 20yrs is much better as those guys can most often tell a problem as soon as they see it. Just ask.

A crankshaft position sensor most likely goes out when hot, and starts when cold. A new one sets you back around $100+ and $$labor is extra.

    Good luck

    few things here and there.
    Im confused.

I listened to the crank, and it didn’t appear to stumble at all. The throw is on par with my 2018, and the new 2023 I cranked up today, with 11 miles on it.

I have no prior experience with any other third gens outside the two in speaking of. I just assumed the ever so slightly longer crank was normal for the 3rd gens.

So, you’re saying this is not a normal characteristic? Genuinely curious.

I had a similar problem on a Lexus GX460, very unrelated problem (it was a slightly stuck open EGR valve letting exhaust gas creep into the combustion camber as it sat, leading to a richer A/F mixture at startup than the ECU could predict and thus a long crank before it cleared the rich air)….

…but I had the experience of taking it to a half dozen Toyota/Lexus dealers and Indy mechanics and wasted a small fortune there, I then wasted a small fortune guessing on my own and replacing fuel injectors, fuel pumps, fuel pressure regulator, etc.

As a final desperate act, I took it to a good euro Indy mechanic shop and wrote a letter explaining its history, tried repairs and symptoms, and a note to the mechanic saying I’d pay $250 cash directly to him if he figured it out. 3 days later, I had an answer and a $200 bill from the mechanic and a $250 IOU to a mechanic. That $450 was maybe 10% of what I spent exploring all the other routes in total. (~$200 per trip to the mechanics 10 times plus my guessing venture, aka $4,000 in total or so)

Not that you’re at that junction yet, but wanted to share a story of how I learned a valuable lesson on a trick to get answers on a stubborn problem, god forbid you might need it by the end of your hunt for an answer.

    Good luck!

I dont think my 3rd Gen cranks any longer than my prior 2nd Gen's.

I’d also try disconnecting your battery for a bit and letting the ECU reset to see if it clears an issue. The ole “turn it off (electronically) and back on again” hard reset type thing.

Most definitely not normal. It normally takes about 2 seconds of cranking to start not 20 like my video. In my video it also actually failed to start the first time and just shook rather disturbingly until I turned it off and on again. It doesn't always fail to start completely but seems to be becoming more predictable.

Ah, understood. I had the audio up to my ear, and was listening over watching. My mistake.

EDIT: Only heard the final crank, missed the first stumble earlier in the video
