    Hey All,

Recently ordered a new 2017 TRD off road. I had to order because the particular configuration I was looking for was hardly available. (only 2 in the country, both 2500+ miles away) Just curious to see what is so different about what I wanted vice what other people purchasing Tacoma's wanted.

    I ordered:

    TRD off-road Long Bed Automatic
    Magnetic Gray
Premium & Tech Package with JBL

Seems to me, if your purchasing a Tacoma for north of 37 thousand, you should be looking for these features. JBL was 700 more, that's well worth it for integrated external amplifier and a sub-woofer. I think the JBL system is what made this truck tough to find. Also seem to have many more short beds than long beds available.

Why is the JBL not that popular?
Why is the short bed significantly more popular than the long bed?

    None (yet)
I just went through all of this myself as I just ordered. There are two things that made yours harder:

    1) At least up here (Seattle), long beds aren't nearly as popular
    2) Not many have picked up the JBL option (my dealer actually told me it's a waste)

I think many folks wanting a long bed just end up getting a full-size truck. I need a bed for some of what I do, but I didn't have a need for a F-150 or the like, thus I went with a Tacoma.

As for the sound, I'd say that (myself included) many folks who want an amp/sub setup will end up going aftermarket as this will allow for picking out the components that meet your preference. I got the "upgraded" Infinity speakers/sub in my Rubicon originally... and they were crap. Ripped them out within 3 months and ended up going full aftermarket anyway. It was nice to have the factory fit/molded sub enclosure, sure, but it wasn't worth the money I threw away getting the "better" speaker package since it still sucked.

    Nice choice.
I have the truck but in quicksand. I'm not quite an audiofile, but I love the JBL sound and integration.

I could never own a short bed, I need to use it as a truck, hauling, camping, etc.

You will very happy with your choices.

Mine is a LB with JBL. The dealer told me only about 15% of tacomas are made in DCLB since the frame is different than the other two setups (ACLB and DCSB). He told me "most people get a full size truck if they want a big bed" which I found funny because I looked at an F150 and Ram 1500 and couldn't find many that seat 5 people and had a 6ft bed which I want so I can sleep in the back and put skis flat. You won't regret your decision. My only regret is I didn't get quicksand but it would've been 2 months to order one and I needed a vehicle for work and to move.

The OR long bed is a unicorn in my area as well (Northern California).

Every dealership I spoke with said ORLB's are spoken for well before they get delivered. This mainly due to low supply. One dealership said they only get one or two a month. The other trims sell fast enough.

    Reasons I was told include:

    1. Toyota Regional thinks people wanting the OR for OR use would prefer the shorter wheelbase.
    2. City folks would prefer a smaller trucks but with more amenities inside , so dealerships are concerned the ORLB sitting on the lot when they could sell a few Limited's in the same time frame.
    3. Full size bed? ...full size truck.

Toyota see's the larger sales numbers, I'm sure they aren't making decisions, arbitrarily.

    ---

    regardless,

    Congrats on your new truck!

Wow sounds like some of us just lucked out and some of us had to wait. My dealer has trouble keeping any Tacoma on the lot it seems.

As far as long bed vs short.... were talking 13" on the overall length. Not huge but makes a world of difference for a sheet of plywood over the wheels. For 13" I have trouble seeing how most average truck owners wouldn't prefer the long bed simply for the added utility which I think is significant. Maybe there is an argument that a short bed would be better for off roading, being less likely to bottom out over ridges and the like.

As far as JBL for 750 to have an upgraded sound system integrated is great. The JBL amp in my 4runner is quite nice, i changed the speakers for infinity and put a kicker in the back all powered off factory amp and it sounds awesome. I prefer the factory stereo for the seamless integration. You have to go extremely high end to match the integration and wiring that comes from the factory system, IMO.

I also went with the black and orange interior, which from looking around seems less common in my truck.

Anyway she's due in this week, then the mods start, and the pictures to follow.... already have a table full of parts sitting here. Tacoma world has been great!

I called around, maybe 8 or 9 dealers and only three had one on the lot and two of them were inferno orange. The dealer I bought it from (not inferno...) had litteraly just taken delivery of the truck. Still had plastic on it in the photos they sent me. I'm in NorCal/foothills area.

I really like my DCLB OR MGM. Can't imagine it any other way. I also didn't go JBL and speakers are ok but not great.

I certainly got very lucky. It was my unicorn, I was expecting to order it. I'm in WI for what it's worth.

I completely agree with you that the $750 is worth it. Could it sound better? Sure, but for a stock model in a truck it sounds great!

Nice truck. I have the exact same truck you ordered. Being in California, it was quite difficult to get the truck. I ordered mine before the 2017s hit the lots. When the dealer finally found the truck, he told me that he had to do a swap with another dealer because there was only 5 in a 500 mile radius in that configuration. Took about a month from when the dealer got the truck allocated till when it arrived. But it also almost a month just for them to find the truck and get it allocated (I attribute that time frame to the allocation guy being new to the job).

As far as the JBL sound system goes, I think its great. Sure it could be better but I don't feel like ripping the interior apart nor do I want a shop doing that to install new speakers, sub, and amp. There is plenty of bass for my taste. You can also EQ the audio under sound settings (can probably do that on the standard premium entune audio). It was worth it to me.

Like most people have said, the short bed is more popular and sells more. Not to say that if Toyota made more DCLBs, they wouldn't sell more because I know they would. For me, I wanted the long bed to be able to store more things when I go camping, fishing, biking, snowboarding, etc. I don't mind driving a longer truck everyday, it's worth it.

I bought a 2016 MGM DCLB OR last year with every option except the JBL sound system.
Wish I went with the JBL system but I got a deal I couldn't pass up and didn't want to wait for it to be custom built.
As is it took almost two months for my truck to be delivered.
The LB OR trucks are pretty rare from what I have seen.
I love my long bed and would probably have went with the access cab before the DCSB. I like the look of the DCSB a lot but like the utility of the longer bed more.
    Congratulations and enjoy your truck!
