IDK, Tony is a Chevy guy, through and through. It was a conflict for him when Gibbs switched over to Toyota in 2008.

It's no secret that Gene Haas was more of a Ford fan before he even got into NASCAR, but the performance levels of the Chevys were better at the time, and because Hendrick's engine shop used all HAAS Automation equipment, there were some dealings going on there to buy engines from Hendrick. Gene then, in 2002 bought a Craftsman Truck series race facility in North Carolina from Hendrick and originally ran the '03 season with Jack Sprague in the truck series, and in the Busch series in '04 with Jason Leffler. It was more of a business move to run Chevys with the Hendrick affiliation.

I think Tony's affiliation with Chevy all of these years don't conflict with the team so much running Fords, as he's no longer a driver. I think with Gene Haas being majority owner of the team, Tony had to take a back seat to the decision, and it was one (that I believe) that gave Tony the option to retire from driving. I think the lack of his personal performance with all of the negativity that's happened in his life in recent years has had an impact on Tony's confidence as a driver. The time was just right.

Exactly. He's no longer in the driver seat. It's purely business now. He has to look out for what is best for employees and the bottom line. Ford offered a TON of $$$ and resources. If you're looking down the line to keep your business viable, you want a sure thing. Being the #1 Ford team is a sure thing. Unless you're Jack Roush.

Edited. It is baffling that NASCAR took this deal. I am thinking there was no other $ on the table from anyone. This was basically a no reserve, EBay-style auction and Monster got a deal.

You're probably right, but with Monster having big competitors in motorsports like Red Bull, This is a huge series with lots of money in it to pick up, so it's not like they won't get more exposure, and Coca Cola has long roots with Grand National racing and Nascar, so I think it's a win win for everyone, and if Monster is raking in projected cash by 2019, I think they'll stay. Nextel's deal originally only for 2 years also, but was acquired by Sprint, who had to fulfill that contract with NASCAR, and eventually figured out how much more they were raking in just from the fans, so they extended the contract, which in turn made them a larger company too.

I have been a NASCAR fan for many years now, the trucks were ok, then Rowdy started running them, then they were awesome.

Well I guess, but many times he would get sent to the back and blast his way back up front. You got to admit that's fun to watch.

Here's some news: In a strange working of the rules, #21 Wood Brothers Racing team has leased #32 Go FAS Racing team charter for '17. Meanwhile, Go FAS announced they have leased Petty's charter for the defunct #44 team as well as 6(!) Ford from Petty's fleet. They also announced back-marker fan favorite Matt Dibenedetto as their '17 driver. Leasing charters allows back marker teams to hold on to the charters semi-long term. If a team finishes in the bottom 3 multiple years in a row, they forfeit the charter and it is put up for grabs. Go FAS has run a full schedule the past few seasons using Bobby Labonte at plate races and a host of other young drivers for other races, including Cole Whitt, Jeffrey Earnhardt.

I can't follow the F1 thread bc of too many posts... Tell him go Verstappen and red bull!
what would happen if they did away with the charters?
